Odd Canes ideas

Description
Lucic trade. Gardiner only accepts because he is bought out. Lucic’s deal is basically buy out proof. Calgary moves Lucic, buys out Gardiner, and gains w seasons of 4 million in cap space. If you don’t like Foegele we could include a prospect instead. The 20 some million in space, after losing Giordano, could help them reset and get back to being competitive.
Canes add big body for physicality and goal front presence.
I get the deal is a stretch but I got the idea from an Athletic article with Vancouver and Detroit. Flame away (pun intended) as I am bored of the same ideas and tried some different ones.

I can see that good job and the contracts are almost perfect!! The only thing I think would change is the forsberg trade because unless Nashville retaines some cap because you did a great job of getting the team under the cap but in two years scechnicov (I don’t know how to spell it) is going to want more money than the 1.5 cap space

Sorry to be that guy, but you can’t run that lean on cap space with only 20 players. Interesting idea, I’d love it more if Lucic was only 1 year left not two.

One way or another él nino will have to be traded as he would not be able to be resigned with a contract for forsberg, trocheck, and Necas the next year. It’s truly a shame but nino could probably draw at least a second or could be implemented in a package deal.

So 22-23: Nino, Goligoski, and Koskinen would fall off to afford Necas, Tro and Forsberg.
23-24: Staal, Fast, and Lucic will fall off, giving us money for Svechnikov and for us to decide what to do in net. Presumably we would sign Staal to a much cheaper deal.

I think the cap space is there to support the moves we would need. We would have plenty of ELCs to fill in.

Sure you can. When you have waivers exempt guys that can be brought up and down daily and only cost 6k against the cap, it is pretty easy. We did it last season without a problem.

The Canes are cool with treating guys as own rentals. I would suspect that Nino is the same. At worst he will fall into his down year rotation and be an adequate 3rd line winger with 30 points. At best, he performs well because it is a contract year and we have quality scoring depth. In the end he walks and Jarvis takes his place.

I think the Lucic idea is very interesting. From my point of view Gardiner still has more value than Lucic. Like you said Calgary gets the better contract to buy out, plus the better player. So if I was the Cans I wouldn't pay anything on top.

Lucic and Canes 1st vs. Gardiner and Flames 1st.

Since most of you seem to like the deal I'm wondering if I'm missing something. smile

Oh… contract year… that gives me a chill. It just reminds of Jeff Skinner and how dumb the Sabres were with him. But anyways great job.

Gardiner has more value but it is rumored that the Canadian based teams on his no trade list. So, he loses some value and wouldn’t accept the trade without being bought out. I think that is why we add some. I’ll see what others say.

They could probably add a 2nd and/or 3rd round pick for Foegele RFA rights. And it would make that deal a lot better

Flames decline, zero need for Gards and Lucic despite being overpaid provides a positive impact on the ice

Value aside which I don’t think you’re far off, I don’t think Treliving moves Lucic back out east. They’ve had a great relationship in terms of honouring his NMC after a trade and Lucic waiving it for Seattle to protect younger players. Lucic will ride his contract out in Calgary and retire. Don’t be shocked if the Flames bring him back at a million though, people love him here.

That being said I think the deal you put together is a really interesting out of the box thought and likely a great move if what I said above wasn’t in consideration.

Yes you would have 0 need for him. That is why I said he would be bought out after the deal, freeing up a bunch of cap space for Calgary to help them get back on track.

I get your point regarding waiver exempt players and playing that game, but with the daily cap calculations, you’re going to find it very difficult to build additional cap space starting at this level. The way the Canes accomplished this the past year was the benefits of burying Gardiner on the TS and trading Zinger. It wasn’t until these two things happened that our daily cap grew.

Unless your plan is to bury Koskinen in the minors, we are 100% dependent on unproven waiver exempt players for depth. I’d say that this is going to be a major issue on defense.

Either way, I am intrigued by the Lucic cap dump idea if the cost was correct and the return was right. Good idea.
