Rounding out the top 9

Created by: Leafsmania
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 13, 2021
Published: Jul. 13, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just playing around with different ideas.
-Leafs use $ from Rielly deal + Hyman walking to sign Hamilton after trading for his rights.
- Extra money spent on Reimer, Janmark, Goodrow and taking on Kempe. Gives a more rounded top 9. Adding in Robertson and Sandin full time also helps out.
-Leafs go after a strong third line center. Leafs need to overpay for this so give up an A prospect, mid round pick, and decent roster player with low salary relative to his cap.

If you disagree, please leave possible alternatives for the trades or signings.
For Dallas- would you add more to it to move Faska?
LA- This trade is based on the idea that they can resign Rielly. What would you move about it?
How much did Grundstrom play this year?

  2. Kempe, Adrian
  3. 2021 3rd round pick (TOR)
LAK
  1. Rielly, Morgan
Additional Details:
Basing this on the Jake Muzzin trade.
Leafs gave a 1st, Grundstrom and Durzi.
Here leafs get Grundstrom back, Kempe, and a 3rd back. So better player in Kempe but worse pick.
4.
DAL
  1. Amirov, Rodion
  2. Kerfoot, Alexander
  3. 2021 3rd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Dallas probably does not want to move Faska so Leafs need to over pay for him.
Dallas gets three benefits
-Amirov was 15th overall last year to help with Dallas future
- 3rd round pick to help with future or used as needed in trades
- Kerfoot is a decent middle six player that can be used on penalty kill and is CHEAP. After leafs pay his signing bonus he is only owed 750,000 this year and 2.7 million next year. This will save Dallas real money.

Canes don’t have any use for Mikheyev and it’ll cost more if Dougie does go to Toronto even with 8th year.

What do you think Carolina would want for his rights? I am sure the Leafs will find a taker for Mikeheyev as he is a solid third liner with strong PK.
For Hamilton, I think Leafs ability to structure in signing bonuses will help bring down the term. If Alex Pietralengalo gets 8 with a Cup ring and Josi gets 9 with a Norris, I think Hamilton is around 7.5 and the extra year and signing bonus brings it down. I do wonder if being from Toronto will help as well.

Probably just picks in a sign and trade nothing crazy. If he’s willing to sign for that AAV canes will make it work when he brings that offer to them tho. If he leaves I’d expect him to get a deal around 8.5-9M. I don’t expect him to find that offer largely due to flat cap tho.

Nice build here. Trades seem more or less fair across the board. I wonder if the extra $1 million could be spent on someone better than Marc Staal, or maybe just use that space to bring Llijegren up as the extra guy

Bad deal for the Leafs exchanging 3Cs and giving up Amirov too. The Reilly to LA deal isn't the same at all like the Muzzin trade. Muzzin was available had the term for two playoff runs for the "contending" Leafs. Reilly has just one year of control and the Kings aren't likely to be contenders in 21/22.t
Canes are the only team that can offer Hamilton eight years....a trade doesn't change that

Hamilton wants 9 mil x 8 years. That's the sticking point in negotiations.

As for his rights price, rumor has it they're being offered as much as 2nd round picks for them, so it'll take something considerably more than the Russian answer to Warren Foegele

I agree Leafs are overpaying. But Faska is a defensive 3C Leafs can roll out over the next few playoffs. I view it similarly to Tampa trading a first for Goodrow and another for Coleman.
Muzzin did have two years left, true. The Kings are looking to accelerate their team as seen by the Arvidsson move. Adding Rielly to their core in a weak Pacific division would probably put them in the playoffs.
I took the idea from here and then added as Kempe for Rielly did not seem fair straight up... https://rinkroyalty.com/2021/07/07/la-kings-trade-chatter-picking-up-morgan-rielly-a-potential/

Anyone can offer Hamilton 8 years if they trade for his rights. That is why Leafs make a deal with Carolina.

Looking at Carolina's contract structure, only Aho has any signing bonus because he signed an offer sheet. I wonder if being able to get most of his (Hamilton) money up front would help change the structure as what he invests in the first 3 years could easily make the contract more valuable then if he has to weight to the eight year to get the full amount.

I could drop Marc Stall, run the cap to the limit and give Hamilton 7.5 or 8.

I thought about Liligren. But Marc Stall is still a good defensive player and a third line of him and Bogo would be solid in the playoffs if Dermott or Sandin don't take a step forward.

Kings traded a second and third rounder for three years of Arvidsson. So one year of Reilly should cost less/

Believe the 8 year rule applies to the team that owns his rights a day after TDL. Trading for rights just gives right to negotiate, not to add another year.

IMO Leafs are keeping Reilly for a Cup run in his last year as a Leaf. Kings aren't really in the mood to trade for a one year rental.

Apparently the leafs said if they cant a deal with Rielly done over the summer, they dont want to let his deal expire - no source on that, it was just another speculation from one of the talking heads on Sportsnet, but it makes some sense to me as far as asset management goes

But if makes no sense for the Leafs to not to retain upcoming UFA Reilly, it makes less sense for Kings, not a Cup contender, to trade for him.

I think the idea behind it is that LA will have the cap space to sign him to an extension.

Teams shouldn't be offering much "hoping to extend".
