Next Years D UFAs plus cap space plus TOR expansion trade

Created by: exo2769
Team: 2021-22 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 13, 2021
Published: Jul. 13, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Next year's Defensive UFAs are Lindholm, Jones, Rielly, Pullock, Nurse, Parayko, Ekholm, Klingberg, plus more. The Hawks don't need to lose assets this year AT ALL. if CBJ wants the 30th pick in 2022 and a minor prospect for retaining on Seth Jones...fine. They can do that. Chicago should NOT be sending their 2021 1st rounder at all for him...even if that's all there is to send.

TOR is about to lose Kerfoot to Seattle for nothing....so is the LTIR bucket for Shaw next year and Nylander worth a 2nd. I tend to think that from TOR's perspective it is. The money for Shaw really isn't much for them...AND they can gain additional cap space for a TDL acquisition. Plus Nylander is a project that's expansion exempt.

I know Benning has said he won't shed assets to lose Ericsson. I just don't understand why though. VAN should be extending Hughes and Petterson long term right now.

CBJ still need centers. I'm bias, I know, but I do think Strome has more value that this site believes. It's not his fault the Blackhawks won the lottery and got to draft Dach.

By trading Shaw to Toronto you’re eliminating their ability to accrue any cap space for the deadline. Unless they have a long term injury I don’t know about to start they year, it makes no sense for them to trade for Shaw.

Why would TOR lose Kerfoot for free?

Makes no sense for the Leafs. They are adding the best two assets on the exchange.

Tor isn't eliminating any space at all They're actually gaining cap space.

If Shaw gets traded after the season starts...which is assumed to occur in the trade above...then the Leafs actually create more cap space through LTIR since Shaw is retired.

Is this better or worse than losing Kerfoot to Seattle for nothing in return?

They are getting something. Nylander and more cap space through LTIR. TOR is about to lose him to Seattle for literally nothing in return.

Why would they lose him? They can go 7-3-1 and protect him.

They need the cap space. $3.5M in immediate assistance plus Shaw's LTIR of $3.9M is a big deal come TDL time. PLUS, they can go 8-1 if they do this A Nylander is exempt and makes the team.

Why would CBJ lose a first rounder when they’re going into a rebuild? I personally like Strome but the team you’re sending him to doesn’t make sense imo

Yeah, this was the biggest question in my mind. I still think he has a lot of value. I don't think the last pick in the 1st round in a weak draft is that special...So that's why I made the trade, but I hear ya.

That’s not how LTIR works. Since Toronto doesn’t have any other LTIR contracts, trading for Shaw is eliminating Toronto’s ability to accrue cap space.

You're wrong. Teams trade for LTIR contracts all the time. TOR specifically does this. Clarkson was an LTIR acquisition. The issue is whether someone is declared LTIR in the summer OR whether they are declared LTIR during the year. The assumption I'm making is that Shaw stays on the Hawks until Day 2 of the season...which then he gets sent to LTIR and moved to TOR so that they can accrue cap space.

40th overall pick is not worth dumping salary they dont have too - bury Eriksson in the minors and retain salary trade Holtby or buy him out - its cheap.

Just move Kerfoot for a pick if necessary. Shaw is worth very little for them if they have no one else to put to LTIR, and Nylander hasn't played any games in a year.

You really like Nylander. I'm indifferent. I don't dislike him. I think he's been a capable bottom 6 guy, but I see that as his ceiling. Kerfoot has more speed.

They acquired Clarkson because they had Horton on LTIR. They could accrue more LTIR cap space by placing more cap on there.

It's pretty much what TB did with Gaborik and Nilsson, after it was confirmed that Kuch was also going to be on LTIR for the regular season.

Who is willing to accept Kerfoot? You need to find other teams that have available forward slots. No one is giving TOR a pick if he's just going to be lost to Seattle.

I say they'll protect him and move him in the draft if necessary. They have no urgent need to move the guy, he did pretty well in latest playoffs.

The difference here is that Shaw is a benefit cap wise because he's not coming back. The Leafs will always have that space available to them.

If I understood that article correctly, Shaw would help them if TOR had other players on LTIR as well. They used the Clarkson example that worked because they had Horton, and adding Zetterberg would've made sense with Kucherov on LTIR last year too.

They could add Shaw, but technically he would provide them good cap relief only starting in 2022-23. Teams generally do not add LTIR contracts unless they already are over the cap and due to that are using LTIR.

BUT you need to start with someone on LTIR that won't be coming back. This way the Bucket is always open and available in case another player is coming.
