Blues would accept. More realistically, SEA is going to select Vanecek and you would still have Schultz’ cap hit. Maybe include Vanecek in the trade somehow and Blues retain like a mil for you.

That is not guaranteed Seattle takes Vanacek.

But if the Caps were to add Vanacek in the Blues trade, that would require be more of a mil in retention...much more. Eller is a very solid 3rd center. A 2nd is a high pick. And Lapierre has a high ceiling. That trade is an overpay, but now add Vanacek for 1 mil retention, no way.

Anything more than Eller and a 2nd is an overpay (for the Caps specifically with being tight to the salary cap) for a guy who has played just over 30 games in the past 3 seasons (including 3 surgeries).

I was more so thinking you keep the 2nd. I think it is very likely Vanecek would be selected. I wouldn’t even expect to hang on to him if he were in the deal. Maybe he would take SEA’s eyes off of Dunn though.
