Description
I'm still trying to digest the Parise - Suter buyouts. This is my view of Minnesota's future after those massive news. Please be kind to me in the comments. We have enough cap space to sign everyone (and buy a rental at the deadline if needed), but we shouldn't spend every penny. The cap recaptures will be huge in a couple of years. Rossi might be ready but I very much doubt it. He should play in the AHL/Europe for a year.

1.
MIN
Could be Kähkönen, but the guy has only 29 total NHL games. Picking him would be quite risky, plus there are multiple better goalies available. Soucy is a top4 D with a cheap deal if SEA wants to contend now.
    2.
    MIN
    1. Cirelli, Anthony
    Additional Details:
Eichel costs 10 million dollars for 5 more years. We really don't have that much. We're better off squeezing Cirelli out of a cap-strapped Tampa. He is no Eichel, but we can at least afford him.
    TBL
    1. Greenway, Jordan ($1,050,000 retained)
    2. 2021 1st round pick (PIT)
    3. 2022 2nd round pick (MIN)
    Additional Details:
Tampa receives cap relief while also staying competitive. Greenway is an excellent power forward with an extremely cheap deal. He has one year left until he is an RFA with arbitration rights.

2022 is not even that bad. Years 23-25 we would have had Parise + Suter anyway, so it's manageable. With good asset management, we'll survive and contend. (We can also throw some expensive contracts to LTIR because that seems to be the way to go these days lol)

I dont get why they did it tbh. Theres an arguement to be made for Parise but for Suter? It just messes up your cap for a looong time. Hopefully it works out for you guys Kaprizov was fun to watch.

Parise made sense, but Suter is a bit of a shocker since he was still useful. Feels like there was more to the story behind the scenes - culture, closed door convos, etc

There is no recapture now. It's more or less built into the buyout. We'll be paying off their contracts for the next 8 years, but their cap recapture penalties are no longer of further concern.

Suter must have really soured on moving away from his farm in Minnesota. I'm sure a GM could have been convinced to take on Suter's deal at a price, the NMC really seems to have caused a rift between Suter and Guerin. I created a thread just on the price to move Suter and it wasnt that steep. In fact, I used him as a positive asset (ala Duncan Keith) despite clearly specifying that his deal was in fact detrimental to the long term cap of the acquiring team. These buyouts surely seems like a hasty move. Guerin must have something up his sleeve and this is part of a bigger story

    ^This^

As odd as it might sound, it's more or less better to get them both bought out and out of the way now, vs having to do Suter's farther down the line. As @EccE correctly pointed out, with proper asset and cap management the team should be just fine.

    1) Suter lives in Wisconsin.

    2) It's probably more about the expansion draft than anything else. Suter probably wasn't willing to waive, and Guerin wanted the expansion slot available to be able to protect Dumba.

    3) No one would of taken that contract off our hands and Suter wouldn't of been willing to waive regardless.

Yeah I'm joking about the farm as the italics should be obvious enough. I suspect you're correct as the NMC was a big factor

I know you were, and I enjoyed the joke. 👍

But the joke is better if it's factually correct. 😉

    Ha.

We'll I'm not too pleased rn seeing every Habs fan on capfriendly signing Suter atm.

Last thing I want is the Habs going all in these next two years. Signing Suter and moving their young kids like KK or Poehling.

Hopefully, Suter stays true to his farm and doesnt come to Canada so Montreal can stay the course.

Given that he's still a decent top 4 defender, albeit slowing down, he's still a pretty good option to shore up most defenses in the NHL. Giving him something like a 1 or 2 year contract at $2M per wouldn't be too outlandish.

Yes but there is a difference between playing two players to play for you, and paying two players the same amount of money and have them not play for you…
