why is the perceived value of these two players so different ? People seem to think Jones is going to go for a kings ransom and Rielly would be lucky to get the leafs a 1st. Rielly is clearly the better player and the eye test + any analytic you can find points to this as well
I fully agree, but the public perception is also not what their value likely is between gms. I still think Jones will fetch more (undeservingly), but Rielly will have much more than a 1st in value coming to the leafs.
Jones sort of has the Doughty value where expectation and past performance, making people who don't watch him think his value is where he would be projected to be on the same trajectory. Jones had all the hype and fell off hard without many noticing

Columbus is asking chicago for Dach+Debrincat+Mitchell+1st and that blows my mind

Yeah read it on twitter too, could be initial talk that's way inflated or even false rumors. Taking away Debrincat that's still an awful deal and Chicago wouldn't do it I'd assume. There's always crazy talk like that until the actual trade goes down and it's nowhere near.
If somehow the trade is huge like that though, Rielly will be out the door, and the return absolutely would be higher than expected to the "consolation price team"

I'd hope so because hes the better player by a mile, its crazy how much name value brings in the NHL, mickey mouse league
Jones has become one of the favorites among the nhls upper management on a league and team level. He’s broadcast and promoted (more than every other jacket ever, by a long shot) and is getting national media attention. (And add campaigns on national commercials) His value has been inflated due to Columbus team structure being defense first and the team beating the leafs (top 3 earner) and the historic Tampa bay lightning. Without those accomplishments he doesn’t get the recognition and the value correlation.
Reilly has failed to lead his team across a single playoff round with Allstars and superstars in the forward group. (Unfair criticism but it is what it is)
they should have similar value but Jones has been in a more prominent role on a *winning team* ONLY in comparison to Morgan Reilly. One round isn’t much of anything but it matters when that player shows up big time.

Not a chance CHI is doing that deal even taking away Cat or Dach.

yea and i disagree with it all, seth jones didnt lead anything to a playoff series win, his goalie absolutely bailed columbus out by standing on his head and had a .950 that series, he also made over 50 saves in game 5 , that narrative is the farthest thing from the truth. also saying that the leafs playoff failures strictly falls on rielly is kind of ridiculous

I said it was all perception. But go off and be mad I guess.
Not quite the same, the perception is Jones D is much better but Rielly has better offensive instincts. Organisations looking for guys who can defend and they love guys that have size and can skate. I mean its only 3 inches but they tend to lose their marbles over a 6'4 guy who skates and can Defend whilst having decent offensive output.
