If youre gonna go for it

Description
Note: The Makar offersheet is far fetched and I'd imagine Colorado would match even if it killed them to do so. So please don't get too caught up in that, feel free to substitute him for Hamilton 8X7.

This is why I'm not an NHL GM. Because my thought process here is, if you are going to go for it and end this rebuild, go for it. I'm fine with NJ staying the course with young players and continuing to rebuild. But if they go after a Hamilton/Makar I want to kick things into gear. Add vets up front and especially on D. None of these moves are too risky for the Devils, though they would have to start thinking more critically about the cap. Is this the wisest option? Doubt it. But man if I wouldn't be excited as a NJ fan with this team on the ice for opening night next season.

10 million dollars is not something very harmful to Colorado considering the fact that he’s most likely going to get paid at least 9 million anyways.

Yeah agreed. That happens to be the number where RFA compensation is 2 1sts a 2nd and a 3rd. Anything over 10.2 is 4 firsts which I probably would hold off on (would have to think about it though with a player of his caliber). I guess the idea would be to put the Avs in a tough enough position where they at least have to think about not matching. Whether that is worth the bad reputation with Sakic I'm not sure.

I think we can get more for Fleury if we move him. I still think we don’t move either of them (not what I would do) or move Lehner.

Makar would be great - but I don't think he is going anywhere.

If we have a chance at Foote, it should be from Tampa Bay...along with cap.
Once he gets to Seattle, I cannot imagine he goes anywhere.

Am undecided about Parise return to NJ. Worry he will get boo'ed every shift.

Yeah I get it. I'm actually really interested to see how it shakes out. Number one do they actually move a goalie or not (I'm sure they don't want to but they may have to). If they do, who do they move. And then what is the value? Last year when there were Fleury conversations in the offseason the consensus was that he had minimal or negative value due to the contract and everyone knowing Vegas is in a tough spot. I didn't really buy that then and I don't now, guy just won the Vezina. But teams also know Vegas is strapped and Fleury will be coming up on UFA so doubt anyone will move huge assets for him. It also will be interesting to see how many teams are interested, they may just create enough of a bidding war for Vegas to get something legit back for either Fleury or Lehner.

All fair arguments. I really like Foote but I don't know if I like him enough to attatch a bad contract to him. Johnson would be the obvious candidate. If it were one or two years I'd probably do it but three years at 5M for a player on a steady decline is tough to swallow. Unless you expect Johnson to be a valuable player in the lineup (which isn't unrealistic, I just don't see it with this team) you are basically paying Foote 5M+ whatever his actual salary is. I don't see him as a top 4 defenseman for at least a few years so that's a tough look. Not saying I wouldn't entertain that kind of trade, just not sure if it is the best value we can find if we are looking for a young defenseman.
