Adding Beef to the Blue Line

Created by: MNBassman
Team: 2021-22 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 14, 2021
Published: Jul. 14, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Both Spurgeon and Brodin are spectacular players and crucial to the Wild’s regular season success…but, as we all know, they both are a little bit limited in the playoffs due to there size and/or style of play (especially Spurgeon!). I am attempting to pair them up with a couple monsters that will give the Wild the playoffs truculence they need and to create very balanced pairings of d-men. I am also trying to keep the Wild competitive while we wait for the Parise/Suter buyouts to go away…
How’d I do?
Side note: Roster shown to provide a glimpse of the future, not an opening night lineup.

I want nothing to do with Risto. Size shouldn’t factor into who to sign at the mo.

Another agree to disagree situation for us. As always, I respect your opinion, but I believe Risto (assuming he would resign at 4ish million per) is the perfect partner for Brodin and I also believe his game will blossom in the post season. The Wild (IMO) simply have to have more snarl on the blue line if they are ever going to complete for the Cup.

With Suter gone, Risto’s partner McCabe is the guy to target. Looking at under 3 mil with term and drove the Risto pair in BUF. I don’t deny physicality is important in the playoffs, but we don’t have enough skill yet to turn our focus to that. If you look at the “size” on Tampa, they are all on minimum salary one year deals.

The Sabres aren't going to give up a 2nd to get rid of Risto...If anything they would leave him unprotected for the expansion draft.

I like McCabe a lot, but I would rather have Oleksiak.

He’s such a polarizing player I honestly have no idea what his market value actually is…

At the least, buffalo doesn’t include a 2nd pick and one of their top 4 d-men for just a 3rd round pick, People that hate on Risto don’t consider he’s been tasked to play crazy minutes on a terrible sabres team for years. He’s still a top 4 defenseman on most if not all nhl teams.

Buffalo has like $34m in cap space. Despite the amount of roster spots they need to fill with that money, there's zero reason for them to give up a better pick to move Risto. He's probably worth anywhere from a 2nd to a 4th depending on level of GM incompetency.

I genuinely think playing in buffalo should increase a players trade value if anything, same with Eichel, look at dudes wingers throughout his career and tell me he wouldn’t be a freak of nature on a team like Toronto, Colorado, etc.

If Oleksiak isn’t resigning in DAL, I’m all for that. Either guy would pair well with Spurg, and dare I say improve the D corps?
