Lets make a deal cbj

Created by: Eberles_Backcheck
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 15, 2021
Published: Jul. 15, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Oilers aren't getting Laine, mainly because I don't think Holland has the stones to make a big trade like that.
But I've always thought Edmonton needs that pure shooter to play with 97 or 29. Someone who can get the puck off quick and accurate. Not many guys who can do that. Tarasenko is one, but that's way too risky. Just doing this purely to see what value CBJ fans think they'd need back. I'll give it my best guess.

This team has got my attention 100%. Just not crazy on the goalies. But id love it if we had this exact defense. I am big fan of it! Plus Laine. He should have been ours

That is an absolute overpay that the Oilers should in no way consider. Laine is a top notch goal scorer but he's very inconsistent. You're getting an RFA with a similar statline to JP and offering a young cheap RHD, a young cheap RFA forward that's already playing in our top 6, our top D prospect, and a 1st. The Koskinen one is barely negative value at the point you've retained 50%.

Oilers lose this trade by a mile. Realistically you're probably giving up something along the lines of 1st plus Broberg or Holloway. I personally wouldn't trade for Laine. Oilers biggest weakness was depth, top 6 scoring was fine.

I'm disgusted by that Laine trade, but I'm also disgusted at the thought of acquiring Laine so take it with a grain of salt. Feels like an overpay and Laine doesn't feel like the kind of player the Oilers should pursue: one-dimensional, expensive, and bad defensively.

Oilers biggest weakness was depth SCORING, outside of 97/29, and 93 on the PP, it was not there and got exposed in the playoffs... However I do agree, I would NOT want Laine, dude is a liability defensively, a cancer in the dressing room, and very selfish as a player... Would rather the Oilers use that cap space if they do get it to bring Hall back, or go after Landeskog w/o giving anything up...

Depth scoring was issue #1 but we also had our 3rd D pairing exposed. Biggest need up front is a true 3C but a scoring winger that can play with McDavid is definitely up there. Agree I'd much rather go to the free agent market if you're spending that kind of cap anyways and not give up the assets. Hyman scares me, looks like the next Lucic/Neal/Ladd/Okposo/Eriksson but would love to see a Hall or Landeskog. If the term was short I'd have time for Hoffman as well.

Lol what the heck you talking about?! Who was 3rd in points on the Oilers this year?! What's the gap between 29/97 to 93. Lol. I'd take a bonafide Sniper who can just bury the biscuit who had one bad year. Good I want hungry players who want to rebound

The Oilers problem offensively is that the 3rd and 4th lines are black holes. They already have the #1 PP without Laine. Trade/acquire guys in the bottom 6 who at least score as much as they give up. Our top bottom 6 scorer had 13 even strength points in a 56 game season. We have 2x 4th lines. All the teams that went deep had at least 3 lines that could produce. Laine just makes the team more top heavy and you've given up a ton of capital to do that.

I agree with some things here, I do think it's an overpay also. I think if you remove Bear or Broberg it's a good deal for the Oilers. I get the reputation Laine has, but I think if you put him in a situation where he's playing with ELITE playmakers, he will not only thrive, but have a better attitude and buy in a little more. And he has a friend, former WJ linemate in JP.

Also it may humble him a bit if he's playing with guys like McDavid and Draisaitl. No doubt in my mind he would consistently put up 40-50 goals per year.

I seriously don't see that, he's very selfish, obviously here in Winnipeg there's nothing but rumours, however when people have been comparing his attitude to Evander Kane's that's not really a ringing endorsement at all... He played with elite players in Winnipeg and was the focal point of the offence, but still wasn't good enough, needed to be Line 1 LW even tho he wouldn't give them any reason, whereas Connor would work his a$$ off and earned that spot with Scheif and Wheeler... He's just a bad egg man, slowly turning into that Evander Kane 2.0 personality..

I don't disagree that Laine could very well put up good numbers here. Issue is this team is up against the cap and there's a decent chance nobody on the bottom 6 even hits the 20 point mark.
