Description
Do you think there was any chance that the Islanders would have considered a trade like this pre-buyout?

Do you think Suter and Parise would have both waived their NMC to go to a contender like NYI?

I know this may seem like a stretch, but there was talks that the Islanders and Wild were considering some sort of trade including a swap of Parise and Ladd, and with the 50% retained salary on both players it would have been the same cap hit brought in for the Islanders?

I think the biggest question mark would be for the expansion draft, and I don’t know how this would directly impact the Islanders but I assume it was cause some nightmares when considering who to protect.

Cap hit would have been around:
2021 - 13m
2022 - 13m
2023 - 7.5m
2024 - 7.5m

Instead of around:
2021 - 5m
2022 - 13m
2023 - 15m
2024 - 15m
2025 to 2028 - 1.6m

Feel free to leave some feedback, really was just trying to figure out why the wild wouldn’t have traded Suter (half of his contract) and some capital to a contender of his choice for next to nothing so we could have a cap hit of 3.75m per year for 4 years instead of the buyout.

This would really screw us for expansion and while the cap hits are a little more reasonable (Suter especially), those contracts still aren’t pretty, both now and going forward

I get the impression that Suter was never going to waive his no move clause as his wife is from MN and they're close to his home near Madison. Guerin possibly could've found a trading partner if he was willing to retain 50% of the salary, but 4 years left is still a long time for an aging defenseman even if he'll most likely be a decent top 4 for the next 2 years. But you'd still need Suter to waive the NMC. Don't forget cap recapture could come in to play if he retired before the end of his contract. The buyouts leave a lot of dead cap but at least Guerin knows exactly what he has to work with now.

The Parise for Ladd trade should've happened last season if it was ever going to happen. After this last year teams could see the writing on the wall that Parise wasn't happy with his situation and there was a chance he could be bought out. Now the Islanders can sign him for cheap for a year or two if they really want to.
