Description

Tatar seems like the type of offensive player that could fit really nicely alongside Matthews and Marner.
While giving up Liljegren is tough (still think he can develop into a top 4 D), he would get both a fresh start and an opportunity to actually play on a rebuilding team, while the Coyotes also get a replacement for Dvorak, who would fit well either as the teams 3C, or alongside Matthews and Marner (who he has had chemistry with in the past in London). And while a Kuemper Campbell tandem can be risky in the sense that both may not always be healthy, the upside of the having these 2 means the Leafs can have on of the best tandems in the entire NHL imo. And that is important. Giving depth players like Anderson and Koekkoek (who I believe is close friends with Rielly) a chance to contribute, along with adding a potential scoring winger in Heinen, makes this team better this season without giving up too many assets of significance imo.

Expansion-draft-fodder Kerfoot and rookie Liljegren get you Kuemper without the retention. Dvorak alone is worth more than Kasperi Kapanen.

I dont know how that is the case tbh. The Coyotes want to get rid of salary, and clearing Dvorak's contract alone clears close to 20 million, and most of Kerfoot's contract is paid out. And while the Leafs may have to add more, Liljegren still imo is a competent top 4 D who needs somewhere to play. While Kuemper is a good goalie, his injury history, fact he may be exposed, and that he is a year out from FA, adding onto the fact there are a ton of goalies that are available this offseason, I dont think this trade is so unfair, but that is just my opinion. Also Bill Armstrong hasnt really ever made a major trade, so its hard to know how he is as a trader, and Kyle Dubas often makes shrewd trades so something along the lines of this makes sense. From what I understand the Leafs may have to add more for retention.
