I hope so! I have a feeling it’ll be north of a million though, we’ll wait and see!

I think that a 3rd will be enough for Ottawa to take byron salary because he is still usefull on the pk.

But that lineup you can keep Byron for 21/22 and keep your first rounder.

A 3rd would definitely not be enough because we're not interested in taking on cap dumps, especially that don't fill a position of need. We have Nick Paul and Alex Formenton for LWers in our bottom six, both of whom fit our timeline, both of whom are good on the PK, and Formenton is faster than Byron. There's a good chance that if Byron was simply added to the Sens roster today, he wouldn't crack the lineup. We probably don't even do it for a late 1st because our owner isn't the type to spend more money than he has to on essentially buying a draft pick. At least it's slightly more intriguing than a 2nd, but given that nobody knows how good any of these players are because most of them have hardly played this season, a late 1st isn't that intriguing.

OTT would need a 2nd and a 3rd to take Byron.

You can dump him for a 3rd if you retain 1.5M

I don't think because he is not a total cap dump since he is still decent defensively and he is super fast

If that's too much then you've got to find another team. He is zero use to OTT...

Clearly? How could you possibly make that claim lmao? In 19-20 Formenton won fastest skater at the AHL all star game with the 3rd best time in AHL history (and notably it was faster than McDavid’s 2018 and 2019 winning times at the NHL all star game). There’s a very real possibility Formenton comes into the NHL as a top 5 or higher fastest skater in the league. His January 2020 lap time was also 0.3 seconds faster than Byron’s January 2019 time, and Byron’s 2.5 years older and only getting slower, whereas Formenton is only getting stronger and has yet to enter his prime. So he’s already faster and due to their ages that gap will only widen lol

Byron is a 4th line player that’s owed 6.4m over the next two years. No one is touching him for a 3rd, no one would want him for a 2nd either. His contract far exceeds his usefulness. He’s probably 2m/year overpaid and that’s going to cost you. If you ate this year and moved him next offseason then a 2nd might do the trick but definitely not a 3rd.

And this is exactly why I put a first in the trade. From a Habs perspective, I know it would take at least a late first to peak Ottawa’s interest

I'm not gonna argue with that because you clearly don't know what you are talking about when you talk about Byron

And also, Montreal would NEVER give up a first just to get rid of Byron's contract. You don't know Bergevin at all if you think that it's going to happen in real life.

Then you keep him. Tampa is likely going to have to pay at least a 1st to get rid of Tyler Johnson. Very useful player but another 3 years at 5m is brutal for what he brings. It’s the exact same with Byron. He can be a useful player but 2 years at 3.4m is brutal as well.

Ottawa took a one year 3.4m cap dump from Tampa last year in Paquette and Coburn. Tampa paid them a 2nd (and took back two ltir contracts). You’re sending 3.4m twice. The baseline should be two 2nds. A late 1st is close to equal value to two 2nds and I agree with OP that a 1st would get someone interested.

But again, if you’re not willing to pay the going price then you keep him and his bloated contract.
