We’re starting to see a trend with the Red Wings

They take on the final year of overpaid veterans to maximize cap space

But I’m excited to see Leddy in Detroit because he used to play for the Blackhawks

He'll flip Leddy for a 1st + or something at the TD

3/4 of 7M (@ trade deadline) + Panik for 2 years is still a lot of money for a low 1st potential.

What if Leddy get injured? Nearly 10M and a 2nd down the drain. Risky business

WTF Yzerman!? I think the only reason that he made this trade is to gain trust from GMs around the league, that he doesn’t always fleece them. Show them he can lose on value in small trades, so he can win on bigger future trades.

Cup winner, and capable of 30+ points in a position of need. Leddy is a good addition, but as a Detroit fan I’m puzzled.

Retaining on Panik for 2 years and giving up a 2nd seems like a lot. Sure we can probably flip him for more, and this draft isn’t super strong, but I’d rather get Graves at that price. This likely pulls us out of the Dunn running too?

I’m Yzerman we trust…

So, they protect Hronek, Lindstrom and Leddy? They might lose Stecher now. I would Protect Gustav over Troy.

Well, if he trades Bertuzzi for futures, he might go 8-1 without losing anything valuable (Erne)

I’ll bet a million dollars that Bertuzzi won’t get traded

Fair deal, Leddy is still a good top 4 defender and Isles get assets for a guy who was maybe Seattle’s pick

Only difference is that they got paid a 2nd to take on Staal and this time they’re the ones paying the 2nd to take on Leddy.

The New York Islanders ...

A cup contending team that would have had enormous problems with the salary cap gets...

1. A 2nd round pick for the upcoming draft

2. A swap of roster players with the other team being the one that retains salary.

3. Over 4 million in free cap space

4. Guaranteed protection for Mayfield/Pulock/Pelech

The Detroit Red Wings ...

A rebuilding team that needs to be accumulating picks and trading away pending UFAs rather than bringing them in ...

1. Gives away a top draft pick for the upcoming draft.

2. Trades for a pending UFA who would take away a protection spot from someone else.

3. Trades for a pending UFA who does not have any publicly known incentives for signing an extension with Detroit.

4. Can't come up with better ways to hit the cap floor.

The Islanders get carte blanche while the Red Wings get bent over.

I voted for the New York Islanders.

I know this is tongue in cheek, but I heard this take with Stepan and that one didn't exactly work out. I think this is gonna end up a DET L.

Best GM in the league overpaying for washed up D? I'd love to here Yzerman's rationale here.

Isles can use that 2nd to dump Komarov and Hickey. Big moves from Lou.

I don't hate this deal for Yzerman, because Detroit has the cap room and he can probably flip Leddy for better assets at the deadline once contenders know who they are and have accrued cap space. Defensive depth is a valuable luxury; just look at what Tampa paid for Savard. But I do think Yzerman should have had leverage given NYI's cap problems, and he didn't make great use of it as all. So that's a huge win for the Islanders, and I wonder what Yzerman was thinking here when there are so many teams who would have pretty much let him rob them because of the flat cap struggle.

Isles easily win this trade, because that's more than one might expect to get back on a deal you purely make to shed cap.

THAT SAID.

How many times have we seen teams give up a 1st at the TDL for a player to round out the roster? I could easily see a contender in need of a 2nd pairing puck moving defenseman trade for a 50% retained Leddy at the TDL giving up a 1st rounder or more in the process. Sure, that trade hasn't happened yet, but I can't think of why else Detroit makes this trade. By the end of the year, I think both teams will have gained from this trade: the Isles get desperately needed cap space, avoid losing a defenseman for nothing to Seattle AND a 2nd to boot and Detroit likely uses Panik to bump the 2nd up to a 1st and a bit more.
