I think this is fine for someone who has shown all-star level capabilities and still has room to grow.
It also means that the bar has been set for Makar and Hughes. If either teams wants to maximize the term they'll have to be looking at 8 million and up.
Slightly too much for me, but I'm not complaining.
LET'S GO STARS
Obviously it would be nice to have him cheaper, but all of his accomplishments throughout his career really gave him leverage.
1. Being trusted by Rick Bowness at age 20
2. Being trusted by Rick Bowness to carry the FCC line at age 20
3. Leading a team that wasn't a contender at the time to the finals at age 20
4. Being a solid player under Rick Bowness's stupid system, and being asked to play a defensive role not an offensive one.
Win/win extension. Heiskanen gets what he deserves and Dallas made a great move lowing his salary in the final years. I think we will see much more contracts like that from now.

You get the point.
It seems people lack this thing called foresight....
Heiskanen at 25-29 is gonna be better than how he is now and the cap will eventually go up again.
Lock him up for the prime of his career for a reasonable hit. Such a no brainer that this contract will age well.

Also the fact that Rick Bowness will either retire or die of old age at that point, which will make Miro even better because he won't have to deal being under that stupid system.
He doesn't yet have the full body of results that would garner a contract like this, and as they didn't get a discount for going long (as I don't think he'd get much more than this in 3 years time) I would have bridged him.
You don't get a "discount" for going long. The longer the deal for a guy who will be in his prime the entire contract the higher the AAV. Miro is going to be underpaid in the last 3 years of this deal. Overpaid at the start, underpaid at the end. A short deal might get you a slightly lower AAV but you then are going to have a higher AAV on the next contract.

You'd get a discount, because he hasn't proven to be worth the money on a long term contract. Same reason Hintz isnt making 8 million. They didn't, so a bridge makes more sense.

Could be worse. You could overpay him and only sign him for 5 years vs 8…. If you bridge him he might be worth more than his current contract. Common sense tells you to sign your franchise players to long term deals.
I mean Miro is good but if he is making 8.5, Then what is Makar and Hughes gonna get? Dallas is gonna have to shed some contracts because dang they got a lot of people making big money
I agree that Makar is a bit better than Heiskanen (similar defense with better offense).
But Hughes is not close to their level overall (his offense at the expense of defense).
Heiskanen reminds me of prime Doughty. Makar reminds me of prime Karlsson. Fox reminds me of prime Letang. Hughes reminds me of prime Barrie.
This could all change quickly though ... players mature differently.
But if Hughes gets $8,500,000 x 8 years the Nucks are in trouble.
