Hold on. Let me get this straight. I may be missing something, but Kuemper doesn't want to play for Arizona. He said he wouldn't be resigning. So, coyotes trade Adin Hill for a goalie who some are saying isn't as good as Adin Hill in order to protect a goalie that doesn't want to play in Arizona? I must be missing something?

I still want Wallstedt but this does change the trajectory of the pick. Unlikely they pick him and could even trade back if someone’s desperate and he’s there

Examples of goalies that were traded for 2nd round picks recently include Philippe Grubauer, Matt Murray and Robin Lehner.

As Arizona's backup, Adin Hill is not in that tier.



Arizona gets a replacement backup goalie for Adin Hill who likely won't be lost to Seattle.

San Jose was not able to leave Arizona twisting in the wind and decided to spend a high 2nd on a goalie who would be a backup on most teams.

This trade suggests to me that San Jose would have had a hard time finding a quality goalie in free agency that could replace Martin Jones.



Arizona had no leverage and came out smelling like a rose.

For everyone saying that it makes no sense to lose Hill and protect Kuemper, Kuemper has more value and clearly they couldn’t get a satisfactory trade completed by today. So you trade the asset you would lose for nothing to Seattle (Hill) and recoup a pick, and protect the more valuable asset (Kuemper). It doesn’t matter that they’re losing a young goalie because they’re gonna suck for the next several years anyway, are getting a pick that is worth more than his current value, and have Prosvetov in the pipeline as well as a solid young goalie prospect. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Kuemper flipped by the end of the summer as well as Arizona goes for Wright.

Did anyone else notice that 3 of Hill's 9 wins last season, and 1 of his 2 shutouts came AGAINST San Jose?

Arizona got great value for a player they were unlikely to keep.

but San Jose got themselves a starting goalie for a 2nd round pick.... slight edge to SJ.

But it’s a terrible draft, and we’re talking about the most garbage franchise in the league besides Buffalo. I have no doubt whoever gets drafted there will be useless

Yes but the pick doesn't lose its value until they pick the wrong prospect.
