At least we've traded him, it could end up worse than this.

So if this pattern continues, next offseason Penguins will get McCann back and give up even more, until they just merge with the Leafs only for them to still lose in 7 in the first round

This is expansion draft related, but nonetheless Toronto did well in this one

we dont got anyone else rn. Unless Dubas signs Foligno. Cause Engvall not worth, Mikheyev exempt so if we are going 7, 3 and 1 just throw whoever in.

You said perhaps expose Kerfoot for Spezza. You expose Simmonds 100 times out of 100 before kerfoot.

Hes an extremely extremely streaky player. Yes, pitt should have kept him, but he isn't the difference between winning the cup and not winning

Fair. Anyone calling this a huge w for the leafs is silly. But it still is a small w. And seems like poor asset management from the Pens perspective.

So, let's say they protect the following players:

Matthews
Marner
Nylander
Tavares
Kerfoot
McCann

Muzzin
Rielly
Brodie

Campbell

Who would be forward #7 for the Leafs?

Spezza I suppose.

Leafs aren't protecting Simmonds that would be a waste.

I don't like giving up Holl for nothing. He's a 2M 2nd pairing RHD.

Maybe Leafs can expose Muzzin. He always gets injured when the Leafs need him most and the Leafs have too many LHD right now.

Muzzin is our best defensive d. Injuries are not predictable. That is terrible logic.

Holl has value to the leafs based on how cheap his deal is. I think Dermott has more upside but Holl makes more sense for the leafs right now. One is likely lost.

Pens were mostly likely going to lose him. Also, isn't there a pretty good chance so are the Leafs!

Why? They have room to protect him...

Should have asked for way more. Either way, his time with the penguins was done. No show for way to many games.

If Holl is gone we go back to looking for a top 4 RHD. I don't see any signing for 2M. They'd probably be closer to 4-5M which the Leafs don't have the cap space for.

If Muzzin or Brodie are taken the Leafs will have the money to replace them. In the case of Muzzin they may not even have to replace him and then can re-sign Hyman or pick up Landeskog.

No need to protect Spezza.

He's threatened to retire if he's sent to another team.

There's enough evidence to suggest that he's not bluffing.

Brodie is our 1rd. So how do we replace him??

Muzzin is replaceable internally by Rielly. But frankly leaving him unprotected is insane as he's valuable.

Worst case scenario pay them a third to take Dermott. But I think they take him anyway.

Sure. Just saying I protect kerfoot way before I protect Simmonds. My initial point

Replace Brodie with Adam Larsson.

Muzzin is already 32 and he's past his prime now. He's a great player but he's only getting worse from here.

Worst case is they take Holl and now we're stuck without a top 4 RHD again.

We don't have any 3rd round picks and why would Seattle take the guy who's gonna be our 7th D over the guy who's our 4th D.

If you can replace Brodie with Larsson why cant you replace Holl with him?

Muzzin is incredibly more valuable.

And Dermott is a better piece long term as he's about 6 years younger with upside...

Brodie has a 5M cap hit. Holl has a 2M cap hit. Larsson probably wants 4.5M. The salary cap is why you can't replace Holl with Larsson.

Anyone giving that to Larsson is nuts. Brodie is a waaaaay better defenseman.

Of course Brodie is better but I rather Larsson and Holl than Brodie and Dermott unless you wanna run 5 LHD. Dermott can't play the right side effectively and has been passed by Sandin on the depth chart.

Seattle protect list:

Matthews,
Taraves,
Marner,
Nylander,
Kerfoot,
McCann,
Brooks,
Muzzin,
Reilly,
Brodie,
Campbell.

Expose;

Simmonds,
Spezza,
Engvall,
J. Anderson,
Petan,
Malgin,
Holl,
Dermott,
Kivihalme
Hutchinson.

Leafs bribe Seattle with a prospect or Draft pick to keep them from selecting Holl, bye bye Dermott.

Good trade by Pens. Seattle was going to get him for nothing. Toronto fans will be mad at how streaky McCann is. He will be with another team after next season. Toronto is his 4th and he is only 25

Brodie and Dermott over Larsson and Holl for sure. But I also think they take Dermott and also think Larsson won't get over 3.4

18 NHLers signed & US$6.4M to sign the other 5 (sans expansion of course which will reset things a nudge - so long Kerfoot don't let the door hit ur a r s e on the way out)...

Dubas trades for the shiny piece but truly he can't afford...I hear the November boos now!!

Pens get at least something for a guy that was gonna get claimed by the kraken, leafs get a Hyman replacement at a discount price. You can’t compare the Kapanen trade to this trade, different gm different scenario
