Oilers fan - Would you be mad if we started the season like this

Description
Let's say Ken Holland only signs Saad and is able to resign Smith, Larsson, and Barrie to these contracts. Would you be mad?

I don't think I would. There's reports of Turris training in Edmonton all season, almost eerily the same type of chatter prior to Bear's breakout season. Turris is a vet so it doesn't really apply, but I do wonder, he is a RHC who was signed to be our 3C. Maybe he's able to put it all together?

I think this roster is good enough to be in the playoffs in the pacific division. Winning the Stanley Cup? Probably not. But I think if we're in a great spot come the trade deadline, is it possible we can add a starting goalie like we did with Roloson? Could we find a better 3C at that point? or maybe add another top 6 forward? My answer is yes. Maybe not all 3. But definitely 2 out of 3 holes.

I think by deadline time, we're able to trade off Koskinen (most of salary will be paid off) and teams out of the playoff race will be more open to taking on cap hit. Also, this burns another year of Neal's contract. Much easier to buyout 1 year vs 2 years.

I also think a top 4 of Nurse - Barrie, Keith - Larsson is better than Nurse - Bear. The first option has 4 vets who have seen some sustained level of excellence entering the season. Bear is young and I bet he'll improve, but we just don't have the time right now.

What're your thoughts?

Either Neal or Koski should be bought out as soon as possible to have some room to play with, and I would not do the Bear trade and Barrie signing for both cap reasons, and because I don't think Barrie is actually a top pair RHD either anyway outside of his pp time which Bouch should have. But other than that, I would be fine starting Smith Koski and making a trade mod season to offload Koski to someone with injuries and bring in another great goalie at the deadline. As long as one top 6 LW is signed I will be okay with things, a 3C can emerge from within or be acquired later. But, don't think Turris beats out McLeod or Holloway in camp, they will look better

My thing with Bear is that I think he's got value but I think that his timeline doesn't mix well with this group. You've seen what Barrie can do with this group, how can you not want him back? Yes we have Bouchard, but there's no telling Bouchard can replicate Barrie's offense. I don't think the Oilers can risk that. Which is why I think Bear is the guy to go. He's got enough value to get picks back which we sorely need, and this gives Bouchard a direct line into the lineup while not having to carry the offense since he's got Barrie to learn from.

If you remove Barrie and insert Bear, we'd be less experience (we already have Lagesson-Bouchard as third pair), and we won't be able to recoup the picks we've lost.

yes I'd be mad. the big issue with this team is scoring depth and bringing back almost everyone expecting different results is the legit definition of insanity. when you have one of (if the not) the worst bottom 6's in the league you should overhaul it not keep it the same...

That's a fair point. Who would you bring in for the bottom 6 to improve scoring depth?

My plan was to bank on another year of Kahun and Turris getting used to Edmonton. I find that new players typically play better the second year than the first year since some guys aren't as good to adapting to new environments quickly.

I would say the only bottom 6 guy that is safe is archibald. IF turris bounces back you have a 4 C and McLeod is a 3rd C regardless but everyone else would have to go. Move kassian for pick recapture, not resign the RFA's and get experience. a staal would be great as a centre. cizikas would be a great add and with tatar going for a bargain bin price you could sign him to a cheap show me deal to place on the 3rd line (but still be versatile enough to be around the lineup). Then have the younger guys get shows like marody and especially lavoie. I think raphael has that it factor imo

I’m Ok with moving Bear but only if he brings a roster player, young goalie, Seattle’s going to draft a couple, Bear played jr in the area he’s also a Native American and Seattle has strong ties within that community, but moving Bear for picks is out of the question we’re not rebuilding we’re trying to win and need roster up grades not futures.
