Ideal Offseason

Created by: Devil
Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 19, 2021
Published: Jul. 19, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Sharangovich and Kuokkanen sign bridge deals
Devils sign Adam Larsson and Freddie Andersen in free agency
Devils draft Luke Hughes with the 4th pick

1st line - Played very well together in the second half of the season. No reason to rush Holtz, Foote, or Mercer to the first line
2nd line stays the same as last year. The European line had a small sample size but they were amazing together.
3rd line - Last year was just throw-ins. This year we should do with a youth movement. I was unsure if Boqvist would play center, but Fitz mentioned Boqvist as a center in a recent interview
4th line - Great chemistry and very physical. They should be great next year (if Bastian stays)

1st pair - They played well together before getting split up. Both of them should get top 4 minutes.
2nd pair - If Butcher doesn't get claimed by Seattle, the Devils need to get him a defensive partner.
3rd pair - Perfect balance between offense and defense

G - Blackwood is the obvious starter with Andersen as his veteran backup

Mercer goes to the AHL for one year
Walsh and Bahl spend half of the season in the AHL before being called up after the deadline

This is realistic, but I think the lack of depth is concerning. I think the Devils need to figure out a short-term, high AAV way of signing one of Granlund or Janmark in order to provide middle-6 experience and depth so these untested kids can have a night off (let alone we get hit with the injury bug).

I like the defensive plan - perhaps toggling between Siegs and Butcher. If WB does get grabbed by Seattle, we'd have to grab a Tier II LD (Mike Reilly, Jake McCabe?) or trial Bahl in greater capacity.

Forwards look right to me. Four lines as I would have them. And Clarke, Studenic as next guys in.

If Seattle takes Bastian, I think they will have to consider finding someone who fits that line. Mango played some 4RW last year but not sure that fits as well as another size/speed/havoc package to go along with Wood/McLeod.

I also think there is a chance we will see both Tyce Thompson and Graeme Clarke audition for 3C at some point in season. Both got reps centering Holtz line in AHL last year.

On defense, Smith and Severson are going to split up. Or so I have read. Graves > Butcher eventually, I’d think as well.

Larsson would be great, but it sounds like he is headed back to Edmonton. We could use his lane-blocking.

And agree with @DevilsFanInTx that we could use a veteran in that 3rd line. Even if it’s bringing back Zajac for a year.

On the draft, I want, in this order:
1. Power
2. Eklund
3. Hughes
4. Clarke

But very happy with any of them

The "ideal" offseason involves no external additions to the forward group, and signing Freddie Andersen as a backup?

Some pretty low expectations here my man.

I'd also like a vet forward addition, but offer an alternative version... drop Kuokkanen (Holtz gets more seasoning in AHL) to third line and bring in a veteran UFA or Cap dump with offense next to Hughes - Sharangovich. If a reasonable fit isn't there, revert to this version.

I'd also go Clarke over Holtz to start season. Give Holtz some more time to build confidence and comfort on NA ice. Clarke earned a NHL sweater last season.
