Description
Don't think many saw my last one. Few changes. Little more optimism this time around. . . .

This could be as exciting as it gets for the Jets this off-season!

- Another loss on D. THANKS SEATTLE!!!

- Take advantage (somewhat) of Tampa Bay's cap situation and add a RD.

- Also make a trade with Capitals to give them more cap flexibility, adding a LD.

- Copp takes Winnipeg to arbitration, gets his 1 year "payday."

- Arbitration avoided with Pionk, extends long-term.

- SOME good fortune in the UFA market; land a couple "underrated" pieces.

- Usual smattering of depth veterans also added . . . when Maurice decides the kids have had enough!

- Stanley given bridge deal with plans of increased opportunity/responsibility to "see what we have" in the big guy! Starts season next to Pionk on 2nd pairing.

- Vesalainen given an opportunity, playing on a "kid line" with Gustafsson (whom he has shown chemistry with in the minors) and Harkins. Depending on performance, perhaps he moves up the lineup.

- Heinola starts season with the big club, but I imagine leash is short! Beaulieu sits as 7D for as long as Maurice can stand it!! And Berdin is given shot in the back-up role.

Tampa declines. Rutta is a great, cheap partner for Hedman

I hear you. Even though we talk about being a draft and develop team, the Jets (Chevy & Maurice) sure like their veterans!

That being said, I imagine it to be a competition between Heinola and Samberg for a spot this season, likely not both. Playing TWO rookies along with Stanley (and the likely growing pains he'll experience in year 2), is probably not how the Jets will improve defensively . . . which is far and away their biggest deficiency. If not for Hellebuyck, Jets could very well be last in the league, the way they give up qulaity scoring chances every game!!

He wouldn’t be anything in Winnipeg they already have Pionk who’s better and younger then him

Neither is Demelo, whom paired with Morrissey just fine, and who I'm betting is lost to Seattle in a few days. Comparable players, IMO.

Pionk may be better, but pairing aren't always about better players play on the top. It's about chemistry. Cernak and Savard ( The Lightning's 2 other RD's) are both better than Rutta, but Rutta was on the top pair because he worked well with Hedman. He might not work the same with Morrisey, but it's worth a try

Agreed. It's about a balanced D-core and partnering defensemen who compliment skillsets, etc. Pionk is a better RD, but as Morrissey's partner, nuh uh! They are similar defenders who need stable partners that keep the game simple when they opt for creativity and offense.

because Hedman is good enough that he can just carry Rutta, that's it

Now I agree with that cemestry matters but Morrissey is more of a two way defender and Rutta is, I wouldn’t say one dimensional but he just plays defensively for the most and I don’t know if that would mesh well together and I mean the Jets would probably be better off going with the future (not like starting a rebuild) and take Pionk who’s probably slightly cheaper and is only gonna be 26 by the start of next season and Rutta will be 31 by next season so I’d say put Pionk on the top and just leave out Rutta because Pionk has more longterm value then Rutta

I figured Rutta might be the odd one out seeing as shedding salary is a must and it's pretty obvious who Tampa is committing to with a D-core that takes a fair amount of $$ as it is . . . And if you don't lose Foote to Seattle on Wednesday, given the attractive options Tampa left them at forward, you'd probably want to give him an opportunity on the 3rd pair. (?) Gets crowded in a hurry!

That's all Demelo does, as well, and they were paired together for much of last season. (0 goals, 9 assists, +10)

You seem hung up on where I placed guys on here. I have no issue with Pionk being on the top pair. . . In fact I'd say he's out-performed Morrissey the last 2 seasons, TBH. But I see him paired with Stanley ahead of Morrissey, given what the defenders bring to the table, but I think it would be a big mistake to give Stanley top pairing minutes, to soon. (if ever, at all . . . I'm not as enamored with him as some on here!) Given the Jets lack of depth/experience on the blueline, I also don't think putting their 2 best defenders (JoMo an Pionk) on the same pairing bodes well for success.

Not really he only makes 1.3 Foote can play on Sergechevs right when he plays the left Hedman plays better when Rutta is on his right

As sad as it is, Copp will go to arbitration and get the one year deal like you’ve proposed and then walk as a FA next summer. I’d imagine he’s traded before his arb date though. Reports all say Seattle is taking Appleton so it’s unlikely we lose DeMelo so no need to get Rutta. I like the bunting signing. Good job. This looks good to me.

Hate to lose Appleton as I'm certain Copp's days are numbered, one way or another, and would've preferred they left him exposed, but I hope you're right and Applton is who Seattle selects. Not overvaluating Demelo or anything, we just really need to stop losing defenders!

If I’m the jets, unless I can make him a regular, which would mean him outplaying Stanley and heinola at camp, I send him down. He can get a few games this year as a callup and then be full time the year after. No need to rush him. There’s still plenty for him to learn in the AHL.
