Barzy needs wingers

Description
TRADES
-----------

TRADE 1 - Expansion
Like most predict seattle takes eberle.

Trade 2 - WSH
Can be anyone i picked washington for things to caome full circle.

Trade 3 - MIN
Can be anyone again a very straight forward trade.

Trade 4 - BUF
This is a simple cap dump. I feel bad sending hickey to buffalo though so maybe someone else.

Trade 5 - BUF
A simple trade that can go to any team, BUF takes leos contract and gets a 3rd as compensation.

Trade 6 - CBJ
This trade is a very interesting one. CBJ is rebuilding and laine said hes not signing there long term. After last season and domi potentially getting picked, maybe jarmo decides to cut his losses as opposed to gambling on him bouncing back with no center to play with. The islanders are betting playing with a guy like barzal will help him bounce back.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

UFA SIGNINGS
---------------------

Gabriel Landeskog - 7 years x 8 million
Landy to the islanders has been run through so many times. Weve all heard it and the islanders put a competitive offer on the table.

Casey Cizikas - 5 years x 2.35 million
After his linemates were protected, casey comes back at a decent number but gets term. He could get the 6th year also.

Dmitry Kulikov
A very solid defensive defenseman, kulikov is gonna be signed for something around this number. He comes to NYI where he can build his stock in the trotz system for his next contract.

Alex Edler - 1 year x 1 million.
Edler is a decent 2nd pair dman. Hes getting older no doubt but is still a solid player. He wants to win and this is his best chance to win a cup.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

RFA SIGNINGS
---------------------

Adam Pelech - 5 years x 5 million
He doesnt get less than this and i dont see him getting more than pulock.

Anthony Beauvillier - 4 years x 4 million
Beauvillier is a really imortant player on this team. I see him getting 5x4.5 but i could also see him doing a pulock and taking a little less to keep the team together.

Patrik Laine - 8 years x 7 million
Picked 2 OA in 2016 laine has shown brilliance and mediocrity in his short career so far. I think he can be that 40 goal player that weve seen if hes in the right situation. I also think he can decline into a pp specialist mike hoffman type of player. Going into the trotz system and potentially seeing his value decline into a younger mike hoffman he elects to take long term security over betting on a great season.

Ilya Sorokin - 1 year x 2.5 million
There are a lot of reports that sorokins gonna get a 1 year deal on a small increase in aav.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Line Combinations
---------------------------

Landeskog-Barzal-Laine
Barzal gets his pure sniper in laine and a guy he can play in transition with. Landeskog is a better lee who can play physical, get to the net, and most important play defense. Hopefully he will help cover for the defensive deficiencies of the other 2. I dont think they will be worse defensively than lee-barzal-eberle so trotz will be ok. Weve also seen what trotz did with ovi defensively and really helped him there so maybe the same happens with laine. Laine can become an elite 40 goal guy playing on this line. Its perfect foe him as he plays with an elite playmaking center who can get him the puck and a great 2 way/power forward who can get to the net for him create some space and screens and also help him out defensively.

Lee-Nelson-Bailey
This is a very interesting line for me. You have the passer the shooter and the net front guy here. This line can either flop or be a low end 1st line. It depends on whether theyll be quick enough to keep up or if theyll always be half a step behind. If they are able to hold their own this will be a dangerous line.

Beauvillier-Pageau-Wahlstrom
Clearly the best 3rd line in hockey this would be amazing. Potentially 2 30 goal scorers on a 3rd line would be pretty amazing and pageaus gonna put a bunch of his own in the net. This is a solid 2nd line and its the 3rd so im happy with it.

Martin-Cizikas-Clutterbuck
The identity line is trotzs favorite and theyre gonna do what they do. Hit everything that moves thats not wearing blue and orange. Trotz has relied on them a lot the last 3 years and theyre not old enough yet to slow down imo.

Pelech-Pulock
An elite shutdown pair they play trotz hockey through and through. If pulock can refind his offensive game this pair has the potential to be the best in the league.

Kulikov-Mayfield
Kulikov can switch with edler depending on who works better with who. A solid 2nd pair they will be stout defensively and decent offensively at a total cost of 2.7 million against the cap for the next 2 years.

Edler-Dobson
A decent 2nd pair, these guys are playing 3rd pair. The entire bottom 4 can be mixed and matched based on what youre looking for from a certain pair. They play big minutes and help take some of the load off the top 4 more than a regular 3rd pair. Edler will be a good partner for dobson both on and off the ice.

Varlamov-Sorokin
The best tandem in the league, the islanders can start handing over the keys to sorokin while not completely relying on him. If he has a sophomore slump varlamov is still a top 5 goalie and if he takes the next step he can take on more responsibility. Varlamov hasnt shown any sign of slowing down and i have no reason to think he will. The contract expires the perfect time, when hes 35 right before the expected age regression. We finally have an islanders era of (hopefully) great goaltending again.

I'm more and more interested in Landeskog, so I'm good with him coming in. Laine would be benched and traded in five minutes with Trotz and Lou in charge. It's also possible Wahlstrom can be that guy.

Lee has also been a very good winger for Barzal. There's a reason Barzal dropped off a bit after Lee got hurt. The Eberle spot is where the upgrade can be made.

Barzal dropped off a bit because he was forced to play with a 35 year old 4th liner who can’t skate

Well yeah, that too. But Lee was playing great right before his injury.

Agreed but i needed landys defense on that line. Imagine a line where barzals the best defensively trying to play for barry trotz lmaoooooo.

For sure, you could have put czarnik/Bellows up with Barzal and he wouldn’t have dropped off at all. He just needed someone with NHL level skill

I think Laine signs his QO - and you know there’s no chance Laine gets out with Barzal which means he’d be playing with lesser players than he did In Columbus in a similar defense system.

Oh no doubt. If we bring in Landeskog, he should be on the first line with Barzal over Lee. But I think Laine is the wrong guy to get on the other side. Palmieri would be a better fit there than Laine, plus it saves a lot more $.

I was gonna say that lee still should be on the first line, but landy at RW1 and Liane at LW2

I think if laine gets an 8x7 offer he takes it. At this point his values going down and idk if hed bet on himself playing in columbus.

Im very scared about palmieri. Thinking ladd 2.0 after a couple years. Hes still got 1-2 years as a solid middle 6 guy but i dont think this years decline was an outlier. I think its the beginning of the end for him.
In terms of laine he has the talent to be a superstar, his attitude is whats hurt him imo. I think on a team with great leadership maybe he'll get his act together. Also getting to play with a guy like barzal is any snipers dream. He will also tremendously help a bad pp.
As you can tell im still a big laine fan and now is an opportunity to buy low imo.

He’s only 22. He can get 7.5 mill this year, in 2 years he’ll probably be on another team. Eventually he’ll have a season where he’ll get 35-40 and then get paid wayyyyy more than he’s worth (9-10 mill)

But heres the thing, idk that anyones gonna pay him that kind of money. If he has another bad year next year he will never get that money bc hes too 1 dimensional. The only way he'll get $ is if hes so good at what he does and does it consistently that he'll get paid (think ovi). If hes inconsistent he'll become mike hoffman 2.0, and get mike hoffman money.

One thing I’m concerned about signing both laine and landeskog(other than laine’s fit) is that it will handicap us cap wise. We still need to sign Dobson next year and sorokin will be paid like a top starter within the next couple of years plus wahlstrom is going to need a deal too soon and I believe he will be better suited for the rw1 role than laine. Not just because of his ability to score but the fact that he’s bought into Trotz’s system and has made developing his defensive game a priority.

Why wouldnt he play with barzal? That would be the whole point of getting him.

I think anyone who has scored 40 goals twice is going to get overpaid based on reputation. Hoffman has never scored 40 - it was rumored he wanted 9-10 mill so I don’t think he’s signing anything more than a short term deal until he gets that kind of money

The cap works next year. Im hoping by 23-24 the cap will start to move again. I also think that year will work but i havent spent time on that. If you want ill make follow up acgms to show how the cap works. If the cap is still 81.5 in 23-24 a big contract would have to go.

Because Laine is the worst defensive forward in the league - he played in a defensive system similar to the isles and he was still brutal. It’s not even effort based, he just doesn’t have what it takes to be competent defensively. He’s a complete liability.

Theres also the possibility of signing him for 2x7 and walk him to fa. That way when barzal/wahlstrom need new contracts he'll be off the books.

The isles wouldn’t do it but it would 100% cost one of wahlstrom/Dobson and that would be incredibly stupid. Despite his awful season he still has a reputation as a young 40 goal sniper

Youre saying that like lee is great defensively. Lee is terrible defensively (maybe not as bad as laine but still pretty bad) and that line does just fine. Also i put landeskog on that line for a reason. Hes a lot better defensively than eberle. I dont think landy-barzy-laine is worse defensively than lee-barzy-ebs.

Lee is not good defensively, but there’s a difference between being below average and THE worst defensive forward in the league. Since Laine has entered the league he’s been a bottom 10 defensive forward and that’s not changing.

Laine played with one of the best two way forwards in the league (bjorkstrand) and his defensive results were still terrible

Idk about that. After the season he had last year it might not cost that, especially if he goes public requesting a trade again. If it costs 1 of them no thank you, this was just an idea. But if the price isnt too high i would 100% want to take a shot at it.
