Flat Cap Advantages

Created by: LeafsFan
Team: 2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 14, 2017
Published: Feb. 14, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Las Vegas will get a couple good defenseman, and some good depth forwards but no 1st line talent. Even in FA this year theres not much available. JVR will be the best forward on the team and can help keep the team competitive. They also get Komarov who can play middle six. They also get TOR's first round pick to start stocking up prospects.

Flat Cap forces the Rangers to shed some salary, and in this deal they get a depth defenseman and a failed prospect to open a pro contract spot for the Leafs. Not many teams can afford to take on an 8m player so Toronto gets the upper hand. NYR use this to go sign Shattenkirk.

WSH is desperate to resign Alzner, Oshie, Kuznetsov etc etc. Toronto is one of few teams willing to take on the contract. He's not bad but not 5.5 good. The 31st pick isn't very great either, so maybe Leafs look at acquiring other pieces on top/instead of the 1st.

Also I know I'm very strict with the contracts, HOWEVER its important to realize that what will be the only constraint in the Leafs quest for the cup eventually is the cap, so they need to keep ALL numbers down. I compared Zaitsev's contract to Hamonics (3.857) and Browns and Hymans to Jarncroks (2m)

Pretty interesting ideas..I don't think the Vegas one would happen because I can't see Vegas trading away a top 3 pick for immediate help. They know they're not going to win soon so why trade away the future for an impact player(s) now? Vegas will likely try to stockpile picks and prospects, not pick up older, declining players. Vegas will pick up some pretty solid dmen in the draft like you said so I could see the leafs sending some young talent over there for a good dman.

We traded the Leafs 1st round pick, JVR and Uncle Leo for it.

Having just one year of JVR and Komarov, wouldn't help the Vegans that much in the standings or the put people in the seats. Gotta believe they would want a lot more from someone for the 3rd pick overall.
A 31st pick doesn't help right away (if at all). But if you really think Orpik can help for two years, maybe it's a deal. Why help the Rangers sign Shattenkirk?
The reason I think Zaitsev gets more money and term is because he is only two years away from being a UFA. Most players have a 3 year ELC and 4 years of RFA. before being UFAs. Zaitsev being older reaching in sooner (like Panarin and Hyman) I like the 6 year deals for Brown and Hyman.
No reason to think Lilejedren is NHL ready. Do we really want Hunwick back?

The Vegas thing is fair, but this Draft year is also not great at all, but it really depends on the GM.
Also I think Orpik will be of value, and the Leafs may as well collect some assets for it.
Help the Rangers get Shattenkirk because 1. They'll overpay, hampering them long term, and also I think Nash would be really good on this team. He's a Toronto native and I think he could be signed for a really good deal next year.
And in all honesty no one knows what Zaitsev will get, I think Lou did a great job with Kadri and Rielly so we'll see.
And that's fair, I could see Timmy starting in the AHL. And I don't want Hunwick but I just feel like Babcock likes him too much to let him go.
