2021 RED WINGS OFFSEASON

Created by: crusoeno
Team: 2021-22 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 21, 2021
Published: Jul. 21, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The goal of this offseason is to weaponize Detroit's abundant cap space and continue acquiring assets for the future. I suspect Yzerman and the Wings front office will be far more quiet through the offseason than this, but I could see one or two of these potential deals possibly happening. Finding the right value for cap dump trades proved to be difficult.

- Among the RFAs, the Wings lock up Vrana and Hronek long-term. Erne earns a pay raise, Rasmussen, Lindstrom, Cholowski, Smith all earn short "prove it" deals.
- The Wings lose Stecher to Seattle in the Expansion Draft. A bit of a no-brainer for Seattle to take the solid RHD who has a bit of offensive upside.
- Next, the Wings find a trade partner in LAK for Tyler Bertuzzi, making use of the Kings abundant Center depth. A skilled top-six winger that will thrive in the playoffs and a top-four ceiling, top-six floor LD for the former 5th overall pick, a potential legit top-six C.
- Detroit turns to Vancouver to provide cap help in taking on Loui Eriksson's contract for a year. They turn pick 22 into pick 9.
- The Lightning are the next in line to clear cap space, and they offload Tyler Johnson along with a solid C prospect for a third round pick. I found this trade to be the hardest to evaluate, but with how cap-strapped Tampa is (even if Seattle provides some relief and takes Yanni Gourde), Yzerman should be able to take advantage.
- Turning to the UFA market, Detroit brings back Jonathan Bernier, Luke Glendening, Bobby Ryan, and Jon Merrill, who was flipped at the trade deadline but fit well with Detroit the first half of last year.

Detroit will need some young prospects to take a step forward this year. If Bertuzzi is dealt, the Wings will rely on Berggren or Lucas Raymond to make a jump up into the top-nine and provide some scoring. This team would be very young, but it'll be all about developing those young players.

Trades
1.
DET
  1. Eriksson, Loui
  2. 2021 1st round pick (VAN)
VAN
  1. 2021 1st round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Vancouver needs to clear cap space in order to sign Petterson and Hughes. Taking on Eriksson's cap hit allows the Wings to move up 13 spots, from pick 22 to pick 9.
2.
DET
SEA
  1. Stecher, Troy
Additional Details:
Expansion Draft selection
3.
LAK
  1. Bertuzzi, Tyler [RFA Rights]
  2. McIsaac, Jared
Additional Details:
LAK famously has a plethora of organizational depth at C (Byfield, Turcotte, Villardi, all behind 33yo Kopitar), but needs a top-six winger and some organizational depth on the blue-line. The Wings target Turcotte, a potential top-six C, for Bertuzzi, a high-end, high-motor skilled top-six winger and McIsaac, a former top of the second round pick. Detroit might need to add more.
4.
TBL
  1. 2022 3rd round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Detroit takes on Tyler Johnson's cap hit from Tampa, who provides another legit Center prospect in Goncalves. Detroit gives up a likely higher value third round pick. Johnson is still a capable C that could easily slot in as a responsible 3C, mentoring Veleno, Rasmussen (and Turcotte)

We don’t need to move Eriksson. Much rather keep our 9OA

Doubtful Rob Blake moves Alex Turcotte for Jack Eichel, Let alone for Tyler Bertuzzi best we can hope for is Gabe Vilardi and even that is wishful thinking.

Detroit also has Keith Petruzzelli, the Q-Pac goalie, who isn't signing.
Should be able to get an asset back for his rights.
Pretty highly rated goalie

I love that your justification of the Kings moving their second-best prospect (and second highest pick in over a decade) is that the Kings have too many centers. The Kings have cap space, can't they just buy that 20 goal winger without doing this trade?

Definitely undervalued Turcotte, that is my mistake. I could see this for Villardi, then. Bertuzzi would be legitimate threat for the Kings, along with the solid LHD prospect... that sounds solid for a likely 2C.

They definitely could, and I do think I misvalued Turcotte for sure. Perhaps Villardi instead. And then the justification for a legit top-six winger in Bertuzzi and a solid LHD prospect in McIsaac sounds reasonable for a potential 2C.

He has made it clear he won't sign in Detroit. He can sign where he wants on Aug 15 and no is giving up anything for his rights its not like a TDL move where you have a couple of months to get a player signed he becomes a UFA in the middle free agency.

The issue is the Kings have 14M in cap space to address this without losing a top prospect. The Kings could realistically overpay for both Schwartz and Suter and still have Turcotte. The logic isn't there to make this trade.

Plus he's from the East Coast he probably already has the team picked out he want to play for. Fox made it clear he'd only play for one team. I get not wanting to go to Detroit we aren't good but Carolina is better then the NYR.

Welcome to CapFriendly!

I think that your strategic plan is fine, but figuring out how to implement it is another question.

Good luck and keep posting!

He's from a suburb of Springfield Mass. so my guess would be Boston but who knows.
