Barrie is not the solution

Created by: GermanGretzky
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 21, 2021
Published: Jul. 21, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Losing Larsson sucks, because he was the best shutdown defenseman the Oilers had. You need big, strong shutdown defensemen to win in the playoffs. But signing Barrie wouldn't solve that issue. That's why I rather overpay for a guy like Savard and sign Hakanpää (a big, strong yet mostly unproven guy). That leaves Bear as the odd man out, which at least can help to get another pice (3C, Top6 Winger, Goalie) at a moderate cap hit (in this case Kessel).
Obviously, you can also sign Barrie and trade Bear, but then you spending a lot of money on your Blueline.

The guys on the Taxi Squad could all see some playing time in the NHL next season (Yeah even Konovalov).

That would be the best asset managing, but then they still need a shutdown Dman. I don't know a lot about Hakanpää, but I think he could be one.

"You need big, strong shutdown defensemen to win in the playoffs."

While I don't completely disagree, Larsson was one of the worst defensemen on the team in the playoffs:

That Savard contract is a fireable offense. Absolutely terrible for a guy that has already fallen off the cliff: 26.79 GF% in Columbus this year and a horrid 16.67 GF% in Tampa Bay. He's worth about $1.5M on a 1-year deal, and that's only if you have a MASSIVE appetite for risk.

Wow, didn't know that Savard was THIS bad. While I still don't completely agree with you, I can see your point and you're probably right that 5Mio is way to much for Savard.
But I think that the qualities of a shutdown defensemen are hard to quantify in numbers and sad but true I can see Holland overpay for a guy like Savard.

I swear you were arguing for David savard 6 months ago saying lasson is garbage.

Savard apparently has been slowing down?
