If anything VAN would be sending a prospect and a 3rd to WSH. WSH is taking $2M extra in cap hit.

Not saying he is, but cap space is everything now. Benning doesn't have much leverage with Schmidt wanting out a VAN and Benning already said he wants more pshyciallty on the back end. So Benning is getting the more physical, defensive player at $2M cheaper. Want Caps to take Schmidt will have to throw in a little more.

Lets not be silly.....Washington is getting the better player, which is why they pony up. There are other teams interested, so Benning has all the leverage he needs.

The difference between Schmidt and Dillon is not more than $2M in todays NHL, straight up.

Agreed. But remember Benning isn't a good GM and he's obsessed with getting more physical on the backend. Would not surprise me at all if he sees Dillon as a better player than Schmidt.
