    Actual GM

    1. Has an entire team of people working with him on a day-to-day basis. Although he usually has the final say, he'll most likely make decisions when everybody working with him is on the same page and in complete agreement with such decisions.

    2. Popularity and the conventional wisdom among the fanbase is completely irrelevant. Emotional attachment to any player needs to be put aside.

    3. Works long hours, commutes to the Arena/Practice Rink every day and often flies with the team when his team is on the road to watch them play.

    4. Has to keep tabs on every single player that is a member within the organization from the big club and the AHL/ECHL affiliates to those playing junior and college hockey. Not to mention those that are playing overseas in Europe.

    5. Has a team of scouts that will travel thousands of miles to watch one player perform live for months at a time every single game.

    6. Has a team of analytics people that use high powered and expensive statistical software for evaluating players and prospects.

    7. Often has decades of prior experience working in professional hockey and has a superior knowledge and understanding on things from signings and trades to the salary cap and LTIR.

    8. Needs to be of a calculating and ultra-competitive nature that outmaneuvers 31 other NHL GMs and fights over every little thing in a players' contract with said player's agent.

    9. Has to be the public face of the team's front office and keep up appearances at public events. Such events include, but are not limited to, media interviews and local charities. Every little thing he says and every move he makes with his team will be heavily scrutinized and constantly under the microscope.

    10. Has a high risk of becoming estranged from his own family, often resulting in things like separations and divorces. Brian Burke is a good example of that.

      1. Usually works alone during lunch break at school/work and makes posts to elicit reactions of amusement and outage. Does not answer to anyone and will only know if he made a bad decision if someone calls him out on it.

      2. Popularity, conventional wisdom and emotional attachment are often paramount in decision-making.

      3. Works or goes to school from 9 to 5, commutes locally and often turns on the TV in the living room/basement to watch his team play.

      4. Keeps tabs on key players with the big club and pretty much nobody else, although there are some who follow key players on other NHL teams as well.

      5. Has a team of one (himself) that will travel upstairs to his bedroom to watch postgame reactions and highlights on youtube that will be the ultimate deciding factor in formulating an opinion on a given player.

      6. Has a computer, a smartphone and the internet for looking up basic stats. Relies on charts and graphics on twitter as well as rumours from a wide variety of pundits.

      7. Has decades of experience completely unrelated to professional hockey. Occasionally has about a decade of experience as a minor league player, sometimes not even that. Has a basic knowledge and understanding of how the NHL works.

      8. Needs to be combative and overly-critical to outmaneuver other users on a social media forum. Often fights over things with other site users that are completely irrelevant and don't see the big picture.

      9. Has, maybe, a facebook and twitter profile with a few followers and who keeps up appearances at hangouts with his besties. Such events include, but are not limited to, house parties, local hockey games and vacations out of town. Every little thing he says and every move he makes with his team will be heavily scrutinized by a handful of users from other fanbases with no fairness or accountability.

      10. Has a high risk of ignoring family pets for a couple of hours when making posts on Capfriendly, often resulting in things like abandonment and demands for attention. I'm a good example of that :D

" Emotional attachment to any player needs to be put aside."

half of GMs know this **** isn't true.
They chase guys they are emotionally attached to.

they litterally use EVO wild and the same analytic sites fans use.

I think you over estimate how decisions in the NHL are made.

FFS the penguins signed Jack Johnson to a 5 year deal.
It didn't take a team of idiots to go along with that.
They surely didn't use the "analytics" department.
      It was highly emotional.
In general, we can put as number 11

      NHL
Knows how to create a perception that this is a huge business and not just a scam revolving around a few grown adults playing a kids game.

      ACGM
Thinks this is highly intellectual complicated work at the NHL level.

      Yikes

Very high boot licking quotient. Cringe. 😬

This almost feels like a propaganda piece of old boys culture and mostly ignores epistemology which really is the center of the situation... everything else ancillary

For that reason most people here would outperform them overall, they'd struggle with the PR part and whatnot for sure, but the results would be = or better

Some points made here hold some water, definitely high pressure, and yeah people here are still way too combative and whatnot but this post is specious

The analytics point you tried to make is the worst part of this and really is insulting to the analytics movement, we've seen 100% how fraught the relationship is with NHL mgmt / analytics folks, I'm mutuals with most of them on twitter including most of the folks that have been hired and, y'know, often fired for- in one situation arguing against shea weber

Even Dubas isn't that analytically friendly, much less Julien Brisebois or further the likes of Bob Murray and there's an excellent article on medium breaking that down if you google: Kyle Dubas Is Not an Analytics GM, and His Failures Don’t Define the Movement

      Like:

Vince Dunn just got Seattled and virtually noone in the mainstream realm was miffed you're trying to argue that NHL mgmt are analytically engaged? Wow. 😑

Alluding as well to the analytical resources available to most in ths public which really is in a very healthy place right now thanks to SKATR charts etc.

You're also boasting that these guys have more resources than others* 🙄 what would happen if a an average C****m user was given those resources 🤔

*in part why I brought up the licking of boots 😖

Do NHL GMs make proper use of those resources?

My draft projections since 2014 have outperformed NHL GMs by about 40%* and that's with only being able to view grainy 6 minute highlight reels of the likes of Thomas Chabot on youtube... what if I could've fully scouted him... would it get up to 60% or more? Hm. 🧐

*mostly due to NHLe which these guys still don't grasp

Drafting on NHLe alone outperforms them by like 20%

Further; what does it matter if you have a plethora of scouts at the games around the world but they rely on stuff like "compete level" and other archaic malarkey

Which results in the GM taking Lawson Crouse 11OA

...in one of the best drafts of all time ahead of Barzal

Not to mention vastly overvaluing physicality too...

To suggest NHL gms aren't prone to subjective personally charged sentimental decisions is absurd and it seems to often be a surprisingly big factor

I am quite critical towards most users here but...

I trust that most would outperform them all told

      Easily.

      Outperforming flawed mediocrity isn't hard

And some folks here would go above and beyond 🌟

Hilarious timing to post this right around two of the worst and most avoidable NHL moves in a decade just happened: nedeljkovic and grampa mike Smith

      Golly
