He'll be 41 when the contract is up. His bones will have aged 30 years beyond that.

Wow. One good season and they lock him up for 2 more years. Not even Lundqvist got something like this and he was consistently good for almost his entire career... until he got to Mike Smith's age.

Mcdavid: hey ken, I really liked our progression this year, but I was wondering how you’re planning on making us better? There’s so many options it seems with our cap space.

Holland: yeah Connor for sure, we’ll do our best to make sure you, drai, nuge, and nursey have the best teammates possible to acquire!

*trades for Keith, let’s Adam larsson go for barrie*

Connor: Devin shore and pulju are gonna be my line mates eh?

*Holland is planning on signing Hyman to and 6x8 deal*

Connor: nice! Not ba-

Holland: Mike smith 2.2x2! How ya like that Connor!

Connor: man that window looks great to jump out of

Ken Holland literally just gave a 39 year old a two year deal for 2 million per. This is not a good signing for the Oilers as I think Smith will decline a lot despite his great 2021 season.

He was also bad at 37 and 38. Good at 39 but not a good trend

I honestly don't think this signing is as bad as everyone is thinking. He had a good season, and while he's old and not particularly likely to repeat that, he also costs only $2.2m for two years. I'm guessing Edmonton has been having trouble finding goaltending options. At best, Smith will repeat what he did last season, but at worst, he's an okay backup and a good mentor figure for whoever Edmonton manages to find. $2.2m for a backup goalie is not the end of the world. Even if they have to move him, it's probably not going to cost too much. You can't let him walk unless you are confident that you can replace him. I'm not saying I love this move for the Oilers (Smith is not a long-term option and this signing probably signals a lack of confidence that they can find anyone else to use instead, which is a massive hole in that roster), but I definitely don't think it's a terrible signing either.

That would be cap circumvention if he retires. Murli year deals signed after 35 do not come off the cap if someone retires.

If he goes on the ltir he actually has to be injured not just retiring.

As well even if he does go on the ltir, that is not as forgiving as just not having the cap hit despite what people say.

Your at worst is wrong. At worst he is God awful and they're stuck with him for an extra year which doesn't disappear if he retires. There's a reason you rarely see multi year deals at this age
