Description
I see do many Wild roster efforts (including my own) that don’t account for the buyout penalties coming for the P & S buyouts. Guerin is going to have his hands full for the next 4 off seasons retooling this roster to make the cap work and try to stay competitive.
For next year, I see no reading to sign anyone (except McCabe and Kotkaniemi) to more than a 1 year deal.

a 7th round pick means nothing.. but that being said... Detroit doesnt NEED Rask, so giving up a 7th to take Rask as a salary dump provide 0 value to Detroit.

That's a really hefty contract for McCabe. I think he ultimately signs for less money and less term.

Dont think the Habs do it. Cant trade away a 21 year old center who hasnt touched his potential yet. I do like Greenway though, would do Poehling and a 1st if he was available

Poehling and a 1st for Greenway would be akin to Greenway and Beckman for Kotkaniemi, at best. You just went the other way.

Except Kk has more potential then all of them and Poehling is a better prospect then Beckman. Just dont think the Habs give up on JK this early and if Greenway was available you have to pay a good price to get him.

Lol we got a 5th for Dubnyk and Rask is a cap dump only for Minnesota. He would be a good middle C in some teams.

I think a lot of people are looking at long term S&P ramifications this way: Rask + Dumba = $10M... Rask + Zuccarello = $10M ... I am assuming Rask will likely play out this year and be a nominal cap placeholder for dead money. Then next offseason, when we can trade Zuccarello to 20 teams and Dumba to 20 teams, both possibilities will be explored to try to clear out some more cap. Obviously that doesn't count in the tradability of those players... just that there are some natural options that we have going into the painful years of the buyouts.
While the contract is in line with the term, I am not sold on 6 years for McCabe... we might regret that year 4... I agree with your premise of keep contracts short. It's really all we will be able to afford. I think 2 year contracts are okay as well as 1s. Thats just me though. I might go 2 or 3 on McCabe.

Yeah, Kotkaniemi has more potential, but he hasn't done a whole lot with it in three years. He's even taken a step back from his rookie year. But I'll grant you that I agree Montreal still doesn't make that move. However, for similar reasons, Minnesota doesn't consider Poehling and a 1st for Greenway. Poehling is only a couple years younger than Greenway, and he's not even close to the player Greenway is, and Greenway still has some potential himself. A late, late 1st isn't enticing enough to trade Greenway for Poehling, who does very little for us. As far as better prospect, I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone outside of Montreal who would prefer Poehling over Beckman at this point. Beckman has exploded since his draft year as one of the top scorers and top rising prospects in the WHL.

I think he ends up around 1-2 years for 1.5-2.5M, personally.

No doubt he would be a great fit for some teams and could command a draft pick from those teams... Detroit just isnt one of those teams. His value in Detroit is alot less than what his value in lets say, "Washington", might be. Thats all I was saying

IMO McCabe goes with a 1-2 year prove it deal after the injury. I think the Wild would be wise to lock him up for 1 or 2 for about 2.5/year. I'm not sold that his play really shows he gets a raise from the 2,850,000 from his last contract.
