Gotta think a lot of other GM's could've beaten that price for Ned -- what a steal. Yzerman at it again.

I doubt it. 2 years walks Ned to free agency. No one else was really in a position to have the cap to re-sign him at that point. They would have been paying for 2 years of an unproven goaltender. It's a bad trade for Carolina, but I can see the logic behind it.

Could've seen TOR rolling with a Campbell - Ned combo for instance

Toronto don't have the picks, and then you're betting on Ned's great 35 games not being a flash in the pan...

They also have Andersen + younger prospects they could've traded in lieu of the 3rd. There was potential for a deal there, but I can understand TOR wanting a more experienced backup. But I don't think many GM's are considering this a "gamble" when trading for a calder finalist. Sure, he can regress (Steve Mason being a good example) -- but this is nothing but a good move by Yzerman and DET. A 3rd and a guy that was going to walk in FA for a 25 year old calder finalist goaltender.

I don't think he'll go to FA from Detroit. Reports say he stays in metro Detroit through the summer, living with his family in the area and hanging out with players nearby. I'm hoping this is our long term solution in net.

Look at Binnington, Murray... a lot of goaltenders that come up are flashes in pans. This is a gamble and it's the Canes taking a genuine risk. If this works out for Detroit... that's what everyone is expecting. If it doesn't and he regresses to what he was behind Carolina's mashed potato defense (an .890 sv% goalie) then Carolina made a great move.

He spends his summers in Columbus. I can tell you that because he openly talks about it. His family are from Parma, Ohio.

If Hill gets a 2nd -- I think a calder finalist goalie in Ned could fetch a better return.

Where from? Ned has a much smaller sample size, Hill is also an inter-division trade (or it was, I know Arizona are in the central now)

11 game difference between the two and the intradivisional trade aspect doesn't really come into play like you already stated

Ned is hardly a sure thing but he isn't anymore of a risk as any other young goalie. I look at guys like hill ,dreidger, vanacek all sort of in the same light. I domt love the contract, 2 years takes him too ufa status

Sounds like sour grapes. Admit it, the Canes were fleeced by the Yzerplan.

It's not a good trade for Carolina right now, I admitted that. But I REALLY wouldn't call this a fleecing. If Ned plays like he did behind the Canes D core when Pesce and Dougie were hurt (he was an .890) and prove this 35 game hot streak to be just him getting hot... I'd make the case Carolina won the trade. It does depend on how Ned plays going forward

There's a very unlikely scenario that Carolina ever wins this trade, and it won't be known for 5+ yrs when/if that late 3rd rounder in a weak draft plays some NHL games.

Fair enough, I won't get into a pizzing match. In Yzerman we trust... the man has an eye for talent.

Well he's still close to home Ohio, And Detroit is a far more up and coming team then Columbus who's absolutely trending down.

We'll know next year if Ned goes back to what he was before last year's hot streak

Oh for sure. If I'm not mistaken, his fiance is from the Detroit area, so there's definitely connections. I was just correcting which ones
