Description
Saw a tweet from the SJ beat writer on The Athletic that a Timo Meier to NJ trade could make sense...not sure what his trade value is. Shark fans, what do you think makes sense? Note: The roster below is obviously not an accurate depiction of NJD's 2021 lineup..

Sharks likely want a near overpay whereas NJD don’t have super dire need for Meier.

Gonna be hard to predict - I wouldn’t move Meier without a valuable return cause I think he’ll blossom in a trade, and NJD don’t need to give up a valuable haul because they’re on a good path right now.

Kuokkanen or Boqvist and mid-pick.
If Sharks and Devils ever made this move, I'd guess it would be done mostly to move salary.
Would not expect the return to much higher.

Meier has a qualifying offer of 10M at the end of his current contract. Prob not a good idea to trade for him

I wouldn't trade one of my last good players for spare parts.

Either a 1-for-1 for Severson or Mercer. I could also see Meier for Zacha and a 2022 1st but that'd likely be too much for NJD.

I think Foote is good but doesn’t move the needle for me really. Now let’s be fair: I DO THINK HE IS GOOD. But the needle likely needs to be tilting to SJS. If SJS doesn’t get a great haul then either:

Wilson will be fired sooner rather than later

Won’t move at all

And I presume SJS wants to move him and Kane/ Labanc (one of them). So they aren’t looking for small returns on their big targets: with Meier being the biggest fish we have if not Kane (but that’s a different story).

Bratt was better than Meier this past season, and arguably better over the past two (combining point totals and analytics), so I don't think that one would work.

Fair, just not enough for Meier though (even with the late 1st in a weak draft).

Totally fair, but to call him a "spare part" is just downright disrespectful haha

If a deal occurs between these two teams, none of these players/assets will be included:

Holtz
Mercer
Zacha
Bratt
2021 1st pick
2022 1st pick

Maybe Foote, but doubtful.
Maybe Kuokkanen
Maybe Boqvist
Maybe the Isles 1st.

No team is paying full price on a player with his contract.

Literally tryna be unbiased here. You cannot presume anything really.. I mean not that NJD have a dumb gm because they don’t. But look at that trade with CAR/ DET. You never know what’s on the table and what isn’t. To you it looks like you barely want to offer anything substantial. That’s your opinion but I doubt a GM with mutual interest is gonna offer the Sharks a late first and Foote for example and expect there to be a deal.

Just saying you can be right but to assume NOTHING quality is moving is kinda like blinding from your own bias (which not saying you are dumb/ or bias). Obviously the Devils don’t have to do anything which I stated in my OG comment above. But if there is mutual interest both sides have to give.

Meier isn't worth anywhere close to 10M

He's been regressing every year

But he's still only 24 and he'd be on PP1. Could thrive in that role..and he'd be playing with Jack or Nico

I rather have Holtz, Foote, Bratt, Mercer, Zacha, and Sharangovich over Meier playing with Nico/Hughes

You are right that I can assume nothing, trades are often unpredictable.

But many of these offers are wildly optimistic for Sharks. Zacha and Bratt are same class of player as Meier (I’d argue Bratt is a bit better, but another time). Both are younger and much cheaper. So why would Devils move them (plus anything) for fewer years, more salary and equal production?

Mercer and Holtz are prospects, but both rated very highly and project to be quality NHLers…at least on par with Bratt and Zacha.

From the Devils point of view, we would only choose to get a little older and more expensive if we are also getting better. None of these offers are that likely to make us better.

He was, at times, bumped to Sharks 3rd line.
I am not saying he is Andreas Johnsson, but he is not a lock to be top-6 on our team either.

He absolutely would be. Our wingers are not anything special...Outside of Bratt and Sharangovich, who are you penciling in? Zacha may get moved to 3C, but I guess he should stay at winger after a 20 goal season. Kuokannen will get some run there. Holtz, as talented as he is, probably isn't ready based off of what we saw last season in Sweden/AHL. Foote?

To start the year...

Zacha - Hischier - Bratt
Kuokkanen - Hughes - Sharangovich
[3rd line TBD]
Wood - McLeod - Merkley/Johnsson

Foote probably starts in AHL, works his way to 3rd line and on PP.
Boqvist probably starts as 3C
Holtz probably starts year on 3rd line.
Mercer will eventually see time...long-term, he is either RW with Hughes or 3C (Sharangovich in other spot).
Johnsson will get a chance to rebound.
Clarke and Thompson all in mix for 3rd line too.

I think the asking price on Meier is looneytunes, especially considering the guy will be making $10 million+ in two years.
And his production is not greater than Zacha, Bratt level of player
