What I would have done

Description
This is simply my takes on who they should have picked and flipped. I didn't consider any cap dumps or 'considerations' since those are pretty hard to predict and frankly it seems like Seattle didn't have any interest in doing it yet. Please feel free to comment your picks/thoughts, but be respectful, this is just my opinion. I hope the Kraken are good and add some pieces, but as of now I am disappointed.

LTIR is all the guys I would flip FYI.

    They got this one right!

    1. Fischer, Christian
    Additional Details:
Trading Pitlick for a 4th may be a success, but you're telling me Fischer can't either:
    a) Get you more
    b) Make your roster better
    c) Get better (he's 24)

    SEA
    1. Ritchie, Nick [RFA Rights]
    Additional Details:
Decent pick here, but Lauzon is redundant with all the young LDs available. I'd be taking Ritchie to fill the forwards, which is clearly an area with less depth.

    SEA
I'll give them the benefit of the doubt here because Borgen is a good young RD, but since he could hit waivers, and BUF is first on the waiver wire, this could end badly.

        1. Bean, Jake [RFA Rights]
        Additional Details:
Geekie is pretty good and has potential, but IMO Bean has more. He's LD but better than Lauzon or Cholowski. Considering the amount of LD they took, this one made sense.

            1. Stenlund, Kevin
            Additional Details:
This was easily the most baffling decision imo. Stenlund is young, has some potential, is dirt cheap. Even if he gets claimed on waivers, it's better than nothing to risk it!

Also, Dean Kukan is a RD with value, which they got none of, and would have been a great pick here as well.
            CBJ
            10.
            SEA
Oleksiak was overpaid, but great pick. Guess they wanted to go young wth the goalies, so not picking Bishop (especially with his injuries) makes some sense. I would've taken 4 goalies tho.

              SEA
              1. Stecher, Troy
              Additional Details:
I don't have much of a problem with the Cholowski pick, he is young and had some potential. However, Stetcher is an easy-to-flip RD who is still young. He is more useful to the roster, or to trade. At 1.5M, half the teams in the league would be on the phone to trade for Stetcher.
              12.
              SEA
              1. Benson, Tyler [RFA Rights]
              Additional Details:
Another case of a good UFA signing, BUT I'm not sure why they had to select him. I would select Tyler Benson (great AHL numbers, needs an NHL shot and they can easily give him it). If selecting Larsson was the only way to get him to sign, fine, but I don't think it was.
              EDM
              13.
              SEA
Another UFA, but this one makes sense. Not much lost in opportunity cost and Dreidger would have been paid more in the open market. Great pick
                FLA
                14.
                SEA
                1. Clague, Kale [RFA Rights]
                Additional Details:
This is absolutely awful. Clague is younger, better, has potential, and is cheap RFA. This is the single worst pick of the draft in terms of opportunity cost, because there is absolutely no angle where it makes sense. Passing on talent due to a cap hit is one thing, passing because you have LD even, but taking an older, worse LD paid the same because he is 6'5... god dammit.
                15.
                SEA
                1. Kähkönen, Kaapo
                Additional Details:
Young goalie with good numbers who is waivers-exempt! Would've been the perfect #3 or #4, or even take the #2. They ended up with two young backups, but why not have three? Soucy is a pure flip IMO, probably gets you a 3rd rounder.

I would take Kahkonen here and Jensen from WSH, Jensen as an RD has more value and the cap hit is basically the same. It isn't a bad pick, but not what I would do. Soucy is still very good tho, don't get me wrong, he's just pointless when you choose 4 young LDs but then give them no chance to get into the roster.
                16.
                SEA
Nailed it. Marshawn Lynch announcing it made it even sweeter

                  SEA
                  1. Johnsson, Andreas
                  Additional Details:
Not the best player, but for cap reasons (PK, Butcher, and Johnsson are all kinda overpaid), it isn't too bad. I would take Johnsson and hope to flip him for a pick.

Note: I really wanted Nathan to stay in NJD with Michael Mcleod, as they played together in Mississauga (OHL), where I got to watch them. So for sentimental reasons, I change this pick.

                    SEA
Good pick again. Could've taken the risk on Julien Gauthier but Blackwell was more of a sure thing and has some trade value.

                      20.
                      SEA
Surprisingly, I agree with this pick. Goaltending depth is important, especially when it is young and waivers-exempt, which Daccord is. Vitaly Abramov, Evgeni Dadonov (flip) or Chris Tierney (need Centers) were the only other options, so I like this. Saves cap and fills a need.
                        OTT

                        1. van Riemsdyk, James
                        Additional Details:
Ok so this pick is pretty bad, BUT I see why they didn't take the big cap hits of Vorachek, Ghost, or JVR. They easily could've been paid to take one of them on, or chosen one and flipped them (with retention, likely JVR). They saved more than enough cap throughout this draft, taking JVR would have been more than fine and he definitely provides value, whether its to their roster or in a trade.

However, even if I buy the 'save the cap' argument, I think Rubtsov is a better pick than Twarinski. Rubtsov has a bit more potential, is the same age, and did ok in the KHL. I guess he may stay there, so it really doesn't make too big a difference.
                        PHI
                        22.
                        23.
                        SEA
                        1. Aston-Reese, Zach [RFA Rights]
                        Additional Details:
Taking Tanev over Petterson (same term, 500k more per year) is fine. Taking Tanev for no payment and leaving ZAR, one of the most underrated Two-way centers in the league, is not. ZAR may not have some of the intangibles of Tanev, but he's younger, not paid 3.5M, not signed until he is 33, and is a better center.
                        24.
                        SEA
Considering Oleksiak and Giordano, there is really no room for Simek in the lineup. That being said, he can probably be flipped for some value. I would've taken him and gotten some assets from a team needing a 2/3LD. That being said, I don't hate the True pick. He is big again, but this time had some great AHL numbers and scoring to back it up. Nothing more than a 3C at best, but still not an awful pick for a team that needed to select forwards.

Considering I am selecting and flipping Jensen/Stetcher in this world, I'll keep this pick as is.

The best pick of the draft. That being said, they probably could've pressured Tampa to get some assets to secure this.

Great pick. Kerfoot is very similar and would be ok as well, but McCann has the slight edge

                              27.

Good pick. No reason to save the cap-hell Canucks without payment, and Lind definitely has some untapped scoring potential. Probably a 3RW long term, but a fine pick. Zack McEwen is the next best, who is better RN but is a 4th liner type at best.

                                Additional Details:
Demelo is the better player, and has more value, so I take him. Appleton is good, and easy to move due to his cap hit, but I just think they gave Winnipeg a pass for no reason on losing their best DFD. I would've gotten compensation to take Appleton at least.
                                29.

                                Additional Details:
This is a great pick, and could be their version of Shea Theodore (although I doubt it). However, I think you have to take the Best player available, both for the sake of your team, your marketing/publicity, and for trade value. Thats Tarasenko all the way.
                                30.
                                SEA
Ok so, they didn't take the best player available, which I think is Brett Kulak. He's still only 27, paid low, and is more proven. HOWEVER, their pick did make sense because Fluery is a RD (they have tons of LD) and because they chose to take the brothers together. I'll leave this as is for sentimental reasons

A lot of good input here but they key foible is how valuable RFAs are especially relative to short term UFAs especially young cost controlled ones

                                    UFAs very replaceable thru FA

Many players peak after 24 also 👀

Yeah, it's true, RFAs can be hard to deal with and young players with cost control are very valuable. The problem is, not a lot of these young guys are gonna be getting into the lineup or becoming stars, so when there is better talent available, whether you're flipping it or keeping it, sometimes you gotta do it.

As for the capping at 24, you're right on that too, but given the fact ELCs are exempt, taking 23 and 24 year olds is a necessity for a team that is going to have no system or prospects yet.
