I'm using the Erne trade from a couple years ago as a comp.

Similar age, production, pedigree. And while personally I think Colton may have a higher ceiling, consider that Tampa may not be able to pay for him with the current cap crunch.

Maybe, he's a 2018 4th round pick but his production hasn't been very consistent. He's in the NCAA now with AZ State and he's only 21, so there's still at least some value there.

1. Even if Tampa had no interest in signing Erne, it's not like because of that they would trade him for below market value. In my opinion, it's a decent comparable.
2. I'm not sure if Tampa could re-sign Colton even if they wanted to, after the Gemel Smith deal today, they only have just about $750,000 left in cap space. They still need to sign another NHL caliber defenseman (whether that's Foote or a free agent) and a backup for Vasy, making it unlikely that they're signing any more NHL level forwards unless Brisebois finds a way to clear significant cap space. Plus, with their abundance of young forwards on entry-level deals just waiting in the minors, it may make more sense to have one of their cap hits on the roster instead of a presumed $1mil+ deal for Colton.

If one of them actually does leave and create enough cap space, then sure, the Lightning are more likely to sign Colton than trade him. I'm making this imaginary trade considering the current state of Tampa's cap situation, not an unknown.

That won't get JBB to pull the trigger Colton is much better than Erne

Yes, I know Colton is better than Erne. I don't know if I would say much better, but yes, better. Consider the following.

At the time of these trades occurring, Erne and Colton would both be 24 years old, though Colton will be 25 by the start of next season while Erne was 24 during the majority of his first season with the wings. Erne was picked at 33rd overall, Colton was picked 118th. In the season Erne had before he was traded, Erne played in just more than twice as many games as Colton and more than quadrupled his hit total of 36, with 159. So yes, though I see Colton as a superior offensive player despite his low sample size, the only things that would give him more trade value or make him more likely to be kept than Erne are slightly higher scoring numbers and the fact that he can play center. Erne had a higher draft pedigree, more NHL experience, and a better physical game. Their trade value has to be extremely similar even before factoring in that Tampa would have more trouble fitting Colton under the cap.

Replace the TBL fourth rounder with Detroit's if you feel so inclined, either way this trade makes more sense and has more fair value than some trades that actually happen in the NHL (See Nedeljkovic trade for reference). Again, I like Colton as a player. That's the entire reason I'm trading for him in this scenario. I believe a fourth round pick is fair value for a pending RFA of Colton's caliber and pedigree when considering that the team holding his rights has to move mountains to get the cap space to sign him. You now have free reign to answer me with a single unpunctuated sentence you thought up in 5 seconds.
