This is how a cap dump works

Created by: Skull_King

Description
Cap dump 101. Giving up assets to get cap space. Nate Schmidt is NOT an asset, he is the cap dump in this situation. Same if I were to use Holtby instead. (The asset would have less value in a holtby situation, as his cap hit is less). The team taking on salary does not give up anything. Not unless there is a lot of value in the asset given up. Hence a 2nd in the trade below. Now, we could give a little more, but I'm too lazy to change it, so live with it. If you don't feel like giving up assets in a cap dump, thats fine. Just don't make that trade.

Additional Details:
Giving up assets to get rid of excess cap. Might be a little high, but I'm trying to put emphasis on the fact that an asset has to come back. We are not interested in Holtby or Schmidt. Especially if WE'RE giving up assets.

From your perspective, how does it work? Because today Philly gave up a 2nd and a 7th to Arizona to get rid of an ok d man.

Right so why would Van give up a way better asset for a "cap dump" thats a way better d man lmao

Yes trading a top 4 D (who is not a cap dump) and 1st line winger for a 2nd seems "reasonable".

At worst Vancouver has to trade a 2nd to get rid of Schmidt, but tbh he just had one bad season and some team that needs a RD might come in and give a mid round pick for him just like Vancouver did with Vegas last year. Might I mention that was when Vegas very much needed cap space

Vancouver is not trading assets to move Schmidt, he was their best defenseman for most of the year. He had a poor start then played fairly well, his offensive numbers were down, but he still had a decent season. It can take time learning a new system and playing behind a worse team than the one he had in Vegas probably didn't help his numbers/transition.

This is not even close to how a cap dump works.

Also Schmidt is not a cap dump, he may not have the greatest contract but still has + value

I don’t think the poster thinks this trade is realistic. I think it’s meant to be a hyperbolic example in response to the plethora of vancouver ACGMs that have schmidt/holtby (cap dumps) going to Boston for very useful pieces coming back. There have been a lot of them.

Both of them have bad contracts. Bad contracts in the flat cap era are going to be cap dumps.

So one "off" season makes someone a cap dump? What is Boston willing to pay to "dump" Debrusk then?

A 24 year old with one year in the mid 3’s is a lot different than a 30 year old with four years left a shade under 6, and a goalie thats 32 and has ranged from bad to mediocre over the last four years.

To clarify, I never stated Holtby wasn't a cap dump.

Honestly im confused...

Schimdt was a top pairing defenseman two seasons ago with great positive cap value. Last year he was a top four, one worse season (not a bad one) and he's now a cap dump? Did you watch Schmidt play or is this just looking on DB?

So Schmidt is not a positive asset, but Debrusk who is a middle six forward who had a bad season is still a positive asset? Debrusk turns 25 at the start of the season, so there's a 5 year age gap between him and Schmidt. So what age is it no longer a cap dump? Is it 25?

Since we are going back and fourth between two threads I think this goes with my statement in the other thread,

"I'll accept my designation into the delusional category. Heck looking at comments on this site it's either 95% of people making AGM teams are delusional, or 95% of comments are coming from people who are bias towards their team".

We have different opinions on it. You are likely bias towards Boston and have seen them play more than I have, most of the comments in the other thread are from Boston fans and seem to support your view. I am likely biases towards Vancouver and have likely seen them play more than you have, most of the comments in this thread are from Vancouver fans and seem to support my opinion. Im guessing the values were debating likely fall somewhere in-between our two views.

I refer you to my previous post. It pretty much answers all the questions you have.

Whats the worst case scenario with debrusk? It turns out that at 24 he forgot how to play hockey, and it wasn’t just a down year. Okay. You’re done. 3.6 cap hit for one season. Walk away.
Whats the worst case scenario with schmidt? Turns out that the trend is real, and he continues to decline. 4 years with an albatross contract. Big difference.

Ya, I don't think were going to agree on this one, so I don't see it worth continuing to go back and forth repeating ourselves. Until next time!
