Rebuild starts

Created by: Jacketsman61
Team: 2021-22 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 22, 2021
Published: Jul. 22, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Colorado trade gives the Jackets the 1C of the future that they have been desperately needing. The Jackets take Erik Johnson in the trade and buy him out so he can rejoin the Avs at a lower cap hit and give them some depth. Jones agrees to an extension after the trade. The Jackets also send Korpisalo to address the Avs goaltender issues. His contract is cheap and is only signed for this upcoming season giving the Avs cap flexibility.

Why is Domi on the ir?

Your describing cap circumvention with ej. But frankly ej is done, they shouldn't want him.

Korpisalo is a bad goaltender

Domi is on IR because of his injury.

COL would never pay all that for rental Jones.
Spare me the extension, has nothing to do with CBJ.

"The Jackets take Erik Johnson in the trade and buy him out so he can rejoin the Avs at a lower cap hit and give them some depth."

That is cap circumvention. But yes an avs issue primarily.

Oh and the cost for the trade is likely high (not op) but:

You have to remember the cost to dump EJ. Say that's the first.

Then it's newhook, Foudy, and Barron and a third for a retained Jones. Still seems high but not crazy

It is not. This happened a few years back with Brooks Orpik. It is only cap circumvention if the Avs bought him out and tried to sign him or retained any salary prior to the buy out. This is perfectly legal.

The league investigated that and determined it wasn't the goal of the trade. The goal of the trade was to get grubauer and dump Orpik. Orpik didn't immediately resign with Washington and eventually after testing the market returned months later to Washington.

As described above Columbus would be intentionally doing it for Colorado for that exact purpose which WOULD be cap circumvention. In this situation intention matters
