Thats not how player rights work, the player needs to have played for you last season for you to sign them to an 8 year extension. You can do a sign and trade though but that will cost a lot more than a last round pick

The deal goes down like this technically it’s a sign and trade TO signs him to the 8 yr deal and for doing the paperwork Edmonton gives them a pick 5th or 6th is typically the costs.

Sign and trades are never for a 5th or 6th rounder, trading UFA rights are because the only thing you actually get out of it is the chance to negotiate with the player before free agency

It’s the same thing they have a 8 yr and 7 yr deal in place with Hyman it’s up to TO either way he’s gone do some paperwork and get a late pick or get nothing and Edmonton signs him on the 28th to a seven here deal, hopefully TO doesn’t want a pick as 7 yrs is already 2 yrs to much for Hyman.
