On the contrary i'd say its a overpay by colorado. Both those players this year will have roster spots on colorado and will be needed, Kaut for his ELC and johnson for his grit for a young back end. but yeah the first is hopefully pretty late.

this doesnt make much sense for the Avs. Retaining EJ, getting Brown and spending a 1st and Kaut to do it

If they want Cap space they can just buyout EJ to gain 4m in cap the next 2 years.. The net positives of this trades for cap space does not offset the ease of just buying him out.
Brown is a nice pick up but that level of winger can be signed in UFA for the same amount or cheaper AAV.

Yeah, I'd hope to do better for Connor Brown as EJ's injuries is a reason for concern. I'm not very high on Kaut and that 1st will basically be a 2nd
