Easy no from TB. Cheaper and better asset management to buy Johnson out than pay that ridiculous price to move him. Julien Briesbois has stated he is in a position to make Hockey trades now that certainly is not that.

Lol hold up.

For months, DET fans have been dumping on TOR fans for their proposals for Bertuzzi. Most of the criticisms were very valid.

Now, you'll get Nylander for Bertuzzi, and flip Nylander for Byfield, Valiardi and a 1st round pick?

Holy moly.

True, but Bert cost less and a pick that will probably be ten top is a hell of an incentive. If this trade were made you hang on to Nylander 😀

Right, but Nylander for Bertuzzi, a lottery pick and a 3rd?

leafs aren't looking for a lottery pick player though, they're trying to win now. nylander is obviously currently better than any player that we draft a year from now, even if he's in the top 10.

Of course you're correct, I was merely pointing out the upside for Toronto. smile

Leafs deal is off I think by a bit. Doesn't give leafs much of what they want.
Tampa isn't paying that much to get rid of Johnson although I would love that return.
Kings aren't moving Byfield for eichel, they sure aren't moving him along with another good player, and a 1st.
Colorado definitely doesn't do that, they are poised to win now, viro doesn't make sense for them, Byram is nhl ready now.

The lottery pick is no use to us in 2023.

It's definitely a stretch, especially considering it's kind of gross thinking of the Wings and Avs working together, but you have to think a couple years down the road. You're probably not going to have the cash to re-sign him then, given that you have half your team needing a new contract right now and some are going to be long-term?

Sure it is, a lottery pick has huge trade value, especially for a team theoretically a piece or two away from a cup.

Well of course Briesbois says that, but they have 17 players signed and have $750K in cap room, so something has to give. I look at this as a good RFA, a pick and Johnson for the $5M in cap space and the other RFA for the cheap ok player and a pick. In fairness, I am biased in the Wings direction but it's not completely outlandish.

To get the piece you are talking about, you would have to give up that pick and more pieces so it ends up being Bertuzzi (who may never be the same player) maybe a fringe top six winger or a #4 dman for Nylander a first and probably another prospect of subsequent value. It's not worth it.

I still think you undervalue the pick, but that is a good point about Bertuzzi. I'm looking at him as a 25-30 goal scorer on that team that brings a whole bunch of sand that the Leafs need.

If he didn't have back surgery and played the full season last year than I would do it for a lesser package but I wouldn't move Nylander for him with his recent history

Buying Johnson out saves about 3.5 mil. Then you keep the better winger, pick, and cheap young RHS defenseman.

That makes sense, I didn't think the buyout would save them that much cap $. Fine, you can throw in the ghost of Vinny Lecavalier then too. :-)

The buyout if used is a big reason he was able to make that comment, however don't be surprised if they trade Palat and Johnson is the 3C next year

Then we'll deal with that problem when the time comes, you don't trade away one of the better NHL prospects for scraps while he's on his ELC let alone at all. It makes absolutely zero sense.
