Is manson not a more defensive defensemen that hits?

My esteemed colleague from Toronto* has an opinion on Manson that's different from mine.

Neither Lagesson nor Samorukov moves the needle for us. Ethan Bear for Manson with 50% retention feels about right.

if they trade bear then they need to sign Barrie to replace him I will see how that pencils.

Manson is a rental, no way he's worth Ethan Bear.

We would probably do that, and retain, too. I'd certainly do this just to make @cd282 happy.

He is almost exactly like Larsson but not as good. Wouldn’t it be silly to give up assets and pay a bit more for someone you could have signed?

Looking at the underlying stats a bit more and its clear to me that Ethan Bear is a better player than Manson even without considering contract status. So that'd be a 'no' from Edmonton.

That's not good for the Ducks, trading two of their best trade chips for Bear isn't good asset management.
I think the Ducks should move both Rakell and Manson(and Lindholm and Gibson too!) but it should be for picks and prospects, Bear is young but I don't think he really fits with Anaheim's time line to be competitive again.

The original trade had no retention. Manson Rackell for bear is a good deal both ways.

I think the timing would work. He'll be 24 this season. So a 4 year re build gets you a very good top 4 D (perhaps top 2/3 in a best case scenario). D take longer to develop so if you get the forwards it should work out IMO

There are better ways of getting physicality than trading a cost-controlled young RD. Like, say, the UFA market.

No Quality is the problem. Bear is only cost controlled for 1 more year. If they can make it through a year the advantage is nil.

Manson isn't quality either though. Why trade higher value assets for him?

2 years ago manson was Larsson I have to wonder if he can bounce back. If they can get Rik Rak and manson pans out they are an instant contender.

There's a MUCH better chance of Bear tearing the cover off the ball than of Rakell & Manson bouncing back. Neither are young and both have seen declining results for 3 years now.

And you only have 1 shot with them too, as both are UFA's next summer. It's a short-sighted move at best.
