AZ wins this hands down.
Man are they set to start a rebuild next year.
All that cap space they will suck, so they will get another high pick.
This is the long game.

Ultimately this is a pretty fair deal, but I do think the edge goes to AZ. MAN, they're collecting picks like crazy! VAN drops ALOT of cap this year. I think it would be VERY smart for them to give EP and QH long term deals. I've been saying that for almost a year now. That's good long term cap management for when the cap goes up, BUT OEL is a change of scenery guy. Hope he gets back to where he used to be and VAN wins. If he stays as is...that's a TON of money VAN is spending on a guy going down hill.

this deal looks absolutely nuts on the surface but it might actually be the most balanced one we've seen this offseason. OEL's contract is very close (if it isn't already) to being in negative value territory, so AZ is taking on similar money with the cap dumps but with less term. On Vancouver's side, you're getting a young top 6 forward in Garland, and the hope the OEL can find some of his old game, and giving up the 9th pick is reasonable for that package. Solid deal for both sides

Side note: When was the last time the NHL offseason was this exciting?

It's one of the worst contracts in the league per some of the advanced analytic guys.

god, this league is something else sometimes.

vancouver:
+ Benning dumped bad contracts that he signed
+ got cap space for signing Hughes and Pettersson
+ Conor Garland's pretty good
- had to take on OEL's contract
- burned draft capital (including the 9th overall pick) to fix his previous mistakes re: bad contracts
- how exactly are they going to find cap room to pay Garland what he's worth?

arizona:
+ got the 9th overall pick and more draft capital
+ got rid of a long-term contract in OEL's for shorter-term contracts in Beagle, Eriksson, and Roussel
- let Conor Garland go

both teams got what they wanted, but it seems like vancouver gave up more to get what they wanted.

Benning did better than the Flyers... but not by much

Big win from Arizona. They now have 5 2nd round picks next year.

Benning finally moved out the final year of Eriksson's contract !

And all it cost him was the final 6 years of a worse contract ....

If the Coyotes retained 3M I'd say it was a fair deal. Maybe Benning feels his job is in danger and didn't want to wait another year being non-competitive.

Another highlight reel transaction on a banner day for general managers who shouldn't be employed.

Right now the Yotes make out like absolute bandits. Earlier I though Bim Jenning was doing something smart, unfortunately, I was blissfully unaware with how much of a cliff OEL has fallen off of. He's in Risto territory making over 8 million for another 6 seasons.

Beagle, Eriksson and Roussel are all deadweights, but they're all UFAs next off season. In the end, Vancouver only really cleared about 4.7 million in cap space, and lost a top ten pick along with it. Garland is apart of that equation, but he's out of contract currently.

The Canucks have 18 million to sign their newest addition Garland, along with Pettersson and Hughes. You've given Hughes a massive internal comparsion so that's about 8 million gone. Pettersson is going to be in a similar range so another 8 million gone. That gives the Canucks about 2 million dollars to sign Garland and fill out another 6 spaces on the roster.

Good luck, Bim Jenning.

how much salary is Arizona actually spending on those 3 players, for 1 year? Now, Garland way to go, maybe you get to play on Vancouver same with OEL.

You have to look at the other guy that they received. Garland's a really good player.

Why would you pay that high a price with picks to clear a bunch of bad contracts that are in their last year? Plus, the Canucks still have the Luongo recapture penalty this coming year so they will already be non-competitive. Should have just sucked for one more year and then traded picks to get better.
