Why would we trade Schmidt for that package?

Why would we want Schmidt for that package. He’s declining for 2 years and at a hefty cap when our left side is more than set. We now have bean werenski and gavy on the left. The right is fine as well. We got kukan peeke and boqvist which isn’t great but we’re rebuilding we don’t need him especially at the expense of a second.

i made this team earlier today before the bean & jones trades (i was just speculating jones gone, didn't expect boqvist) so it isn't so much on CBJ now, but as I stated in the trade it could be to any team, not just CBJ.

Gotcha didn’t look at the times. I assumed it was after due to the context layed out.

No worries. your franchise took 2 huge W's today, Jones contract makes OEL look like a bargain. and I'm still very high on Bean

You may not want him, the point was more from the Canucks perspective. It would be pointless to trade a top 4 dman for nothing.

You have to think though that we need a defenseman if he goes. So why not trade him for an NHL defenseman. It can be a downgrade, like a Nutivaara but lets get someone who can play the right side if we are trading him, otherwise keep him, he is actually pretty good.

definitely not a bad idea, and I sort of explored it, but I think they'd be better off just getting higher picks for him, then signing a right handed shot in free agency & also bringing back hamonic, both on cheaper contracts. i'm definitely a big schmidt fan and I definitely think he is more capable than what he showed last year on a struggling Canucks D, but i'd rather spend 5-7M on 2 right shot D this off season then keep schmidt for just under 6M for the next few years, especially since we're now committed to OEL for 6 years.

I agree but there aren't really any good RD in free agency and surely with an asset like Schmidt you could find a RD who is a 4-5 d somewhere and just straight swap. They'd get the better player we would save some cap. We are in win now mode a pick for Schmidt doesn't make a lot of sense.

yes we should now be playoff contenders but we definitely aren't in win now mode yet man. our 2 franchise pieces are 22 and 21, our window isn't for a minimum of 3 more years. and getting picks for schmidt makes up for the ones we gave up for OEL & Garland,

The window starts now. We just got a 30 yr old dman at 7 mil who is declining. We need able bodies on the right side of defense over picks.
