His contract is up next season

Yeah I get that but this doesn't hand cuff them. You gotta pay for quality. They have 2 other D on good contracts and lots of youth coming up to supplement the team. They'll find room for MacKinnon.

I'm of the opinion that they should let Landy go unless he'll sign for the value of a 20-25 g/55-60 pt winger who is good defensively as that's all he was before MacKinnon became a 90 pt player. I am prepared to bet a fair chunk that Landy will be the next Lucic/Ladd/etc

Still sort of a dumb like yeah great to have him, but yeah it's stupid they only bought out 1 UFA year.

If Mackinnion is willing to take another Bardgen of a contract then he could stay but based off his play I don’t see it happening

He got less than Jones...

At least Makar is worth that cap hit, unlike Jones.

Big fail for Colorado, not beeing able to sign him for 8 years and missing out on his prime from 28 and 30 y.o.

Got less than Rantanen and I consider him to have a higher impact. Good signing.

When you realize Makar got less than Jones.

But seriously, great contract for Makar

Makkar wanted to hit the UFA asap, not great for Colorado to not be able to lock him up.

I'm surprised Colorado had to pay him this much (They seem to have an internal budget to stay competitive). It's still a good contract for Colorado though.

This is a fair deal.
Funny reading comments criticizing "not getting more FA years" or "Missing out on his prime 28-30"...

Gimme a break... You just signed an elite D-man for the next 6 years at a cap hit that is fair if not low.
Good deal

His deal wasn't a bargain when signed. He explodes after. But now I'm going to make an acgm to prove it can be done

Wait it's not even necessary. When I was about to make it I saw they literally have 4 players signed the year he becomes a free agent. Rantanen, Makar, Toews, and Girard. They most assuredly can sign him

UFA would have started at 4 years. Max he could have been signed for is 8 years. They split the difference. If he had gone for 8 years I think the deal was over 10. This seems a good balance.

Prime is about 23-27. They got it. They kept the aav lower by allowing him to get a second deal in his 20s. Good deal all around.

Also they have him signed for his 28 year old season.

On an 8-year deal, he would've made well over $10M AAV. I wouldn't read much into the six years. Makar has never given any indication that he wants out of COL at any point.

I like everything about it but the fact he walks right into free agency. Good contract overall, especially considering how high Jones set the market with Chicago.
