Heiskanen and Jones make this signing look beautiful

So you don’t know how good Heiskanen is?

Heiskanen is good but Makar had Norris potential and Heiskanen had some hot streaks and some slumps. I personally wouldn't pay that much for that long for a player who's not exactly consistent. Makar is a very smart, fast solid player.

Kinda hate that hockey fans have to understand finance to talk hockey nowadays. You cant mention a players worth to a team without mentioning his contract cost and term, especially when theyre signing for stupid amounts.

you can blame this on Dubas.
Before him, RFAs were reasonable deals.
Every GM in the league has to hate him.

Makar is great. And while he’s worth $9M by the current market (especially after the Jones signing yesterday), is it the best way to build a winner?

We see Toronto with huge sums dropped on a select few people and they’ve not reached a conference final even yet. Perhaps a lot of really good players is better than paying your biggest star?

It’s a good deal, but I wonder sometimes.

amazing deal for a legit top-pairing defensemen, only thing you could complain about is it being six years instead of seven or eight but overall very very solid.

His agent broke it down via the 6 years maximizes his earnings and avoid over paying into escrow and avoids going deep into the non existence cba years and gives him lock out protection

It’s smart for both sides

This deal actually makes the Heiskanen deal look better. To put Jones in the same conversation as Miro is ridiculous as well. Makar walked himself right to UFA at 28 at $9 mil AAV. Miro who by all experts accounts is right there with Makar, is at $8.45 mil AAV for 2 more years when he’s 29. The Stars bought more UFA years for less AAV that may look like ONLY $550,000 difference now but what will the contract difference be for those 2 extra years Miro is at $8.45 while Makar gets $13-$14 mil AAV as a UFA.

While this contract is right in line with what Makar should’ve gotten, it’s a major fail on Sakic’s part for not getting him signed up for 8, even if it made the AAV go from $9 to $9.5-$10. Those 2 extra UFA years lost is a BIG deal.

This is a solid deal, and just another example of young star RFAs not wanting to go 8 years as often, and also not taking too much less than their UFA value. Still a great deal for Chicago though, they aren't buying any decline in this contract, and with D, their futures always seem a little more murky, so I think getting the AAV down by not pushing for 8 years is probably worth more than buying those extra years anyway.

Slumps? You mean his defensive play or point production?
