Feels like an overpay, but Detroit has no problems with cap and it’s a one year deal, so I don’t hate it. The fact that there’s a full NMC means that there’s no plans to use him as a deadline asset, so I see the high price as payment for what he can do as a veteran leader in the locker room for the Wings. I voted No because on paper, this deal isn’t great, but it’s pretty low risk for a possible high reward in developing the young guys and giving them good role models.

So he can decide if wants to be traded at the deadline ... and choose where to go.

Its not much of a shock really, they need acouple vets to round out the blue line and stecher staal made a decent 3rd pair last season.

That was also my reasoning for voting no as well. Was the NMC really necessary?

No, Marc Staal isn't worth 2 mil/year, but I still think this contract is good. Staal seems to be a highly respected player in the league, and at 34 years old he is nearing retirement age. I don't even think he is looking for a cup. Just a place to finish his career. So Detroit can afford to pay him good money for what could be his last year and give him a place to retire, while allowing him to mentor the younger guys.

I can understand wanting Staal around to be a mentor, hence the full NMC. Still, at this point in his career, he should not be anything more than a 7th defenseman, which makes the cap hit way too high.

Don't love it, but whatever. Just a one year deal for a guy who actually wants to play for this team, which is saying something considering just how bad the Wings have been. The NMC here really should be a "I go where I want to" clause.

NMC is weird, but the Wings have the "luxury" of not having to worry about cap hits right now. Maybe he should have got 1 million, but it doesn't really matter
