Way too much cap for Anaheim to be taking on for no compensation

As a goalie fan, you should know better. That package gets you Jiri Patera, not Marc-Andre Fleury.

Even for one year of Subban? From then on it is $825k cheaper for a player at the same age, same position, and almost identical stats. Not gonna lie I like Rico as a player better but it seems like both he and Anaheim want to move on. Hopefully Johnson would click well and play a better leadership role as the next wave of Ducks develop.

Really don't care much about the Subban part, just thought it would be fair for Anaheim to take some salary for one season help balance the deal since Johnson's hit is lower. Thought Anaheim could either retain half of him and get something at the deadline or see if he ended up being a good fit and they could resign him for muchhhh cheaper in the offseason. But if that isn't of interest I'd be fine taking him out of the deal and finding another trade partner. Which would leave Johnson for Henrique 1for1...

I get where you're coming from but I really have a hard time getting a gauge on the Fleury situation. Under normal circumstances, you're absolutely right. But it isn't exactly a secret that Vegas desperately needs to shed goalie salary. Before last season the "insiders" were talking about Vegas adding compensation along with Fleury to get his deal off the books. I get that he's had a Vezina season in the time since, but it's not like he was bad before then. It just comes down to how many teams can possibly afford Fleury's entire 7M salary? And of them, who is willing to give up any significant assets to eat that salary and then potentially lose the player in UFA next year? I don't know the answer but its a weird situation. I wouldn't be shocked if Fleury got traded for a 1st/2nd. I also wouldn't be suprised if he got traded for more like a 4th.

Your premise that Las Vegas needs to shed a goalie cap hit doesn't strike me as absolutely true. I think that if they can move Reilly Smith, they can re-up Alec Martinez and carry the same team forward next season. Of course, that doesn't address their weakness at center; if they are going to address that flaw, your premise IS absolutely true. (Maybe they hope the Nolan Patrick ugly duckling will turn into a swan.) We'll see!

Let's assume for the moment that Henrique = Johnson, more or less. What's our compensation for taking Subban off your hands? It's not as if we don't already have veterans at RD (Manson and Shattenkirk), and Subban's cap hit will only get worse (vis-a-vis performance) as his contract plays out.

Yeah it'll be interesting to see how it works out either way.

I have no issue removing Subban from the deal then. I believe he has positive value with retention but I can certainly understand why others feel differently. NJ is so far from cap issues that they can handle his salary for the one remaining year. So then it is Johnson for Henrique straight up.

That would be the risk/reward. NJ would be betting on themselves here. If they make the playoffs in either '22/'23 that pick doesn't hurt too bad. If they miss in '22 and have another bad season in '23 it could end up catastrophic. I'd only do this deal after a hypothetical Hamilton signing which would give me more faith in NJ making it one of the next two seasons.

Fair enough. I think 2022 firsts seem to have crazy value, and NJ isnt all that good so it seems somewhat a better deal.

Think I'd do that as well. The "make the playoffs" condition is a bit rich for me though. I'd rather it be like top-10 protected. But this is better than like 99.99% of the Meier trades I see so, I shouldn't be complaining.

Boy, was I ever wrong! And it's hard to judge whether I was "wronger" about this or the Ristolainen trade.

You get the last laugh!

Ha it really is impossible to tell right now this league has gone crazy. I still think that the only one who was really wrong about the Ristolainen trade was Fletcher.
