Johnson was under 35 when he signed his deal. If he retired there is no recapture penalty. He didn’t sign one of those old cap circumventing deals. If he retired tomorrow his contract just vanishes.

Sabres aren't trading any upcoming first rounders unless the return is astronomical. They're rebuilding and trying to acquire first round picks. If Tampa wants Buffalo to take Johnson and his salary off their hands, Tampa would need to throw in a first and probably not expect anything back in return.
