Looks like Chicago's going for it this year.

Vegas picks up some valuable cap space to resign Martinez.

What is todays NHL

What is Cap

What is Circumvention vs Non-Circumvention

These questions seem to always need answering

they are not tampa

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. There's no caphit when a contract is terminated by retirement. There's is exemptions but Fleury's contract was legit.

congratulations you just traded away the heart and soul of the franchise. I get it from an asset management perspective but it still stings, oh well it was a blast watching you Flower.

Offloading the contract for no return with the expectation that Fleury retires could be considered circumventing the cap. Of course Vegas could deny that this was the intention.

Vegas is a pathetic franchise. I hope Fleury wins his second Vesina trophy and Vegas suck next season.

Vegas is a clown franchise

That's gonna send a huge red flag to future players/free agents, considering how it went down.

I get why Vegas did this but I feel like they could have gotten at least a little more for the previous Vezina winner, but what do I know?

They made the trade to make room for Phillip Danault, which is now effectively a done deal according to Laraque.

$6.5M for 6 years for Danault once the FA window opens. Imagine giving up Fleury to blow that much money on a middle 6 defensive C.

Why did Vegas have to have Robin Lehner and why did they have ti extend him while they had a $7M Goalie on the books? As great of a job as Vegas did building this team through the expansion draft, they have not done a good job since. They're an excellent team, but their future has been mortgaged. And when and why has a team ever traded away a Vezina winner for nothing, less than a month after he won the Vezina?

It's just saddening that this could lead to Fleury's retirement. For a team that's set on winning a cup, dumping your Vezina-winning face-of-the-franchise goaltender with a $7 million cap hit for just one more year in exchange for nothing in return is not how you do it. The fact that they didn't even tell him about it is the final stab in the back.

good move by VGK.
They dumped a 7 mil contract.
The question is, what will they do with that 7 mil.
I know there are rumors of signings.
Lets wait and see what really happens.
Either way, their cap was way off balance with 2 expensive goal tenders. They got rid of one.
CHI probably regrets this move, then again, they look like they will regret a lot of their moves this offseason.

First stabbed in the back on the ice and now he'll get stabbed in the back off the ice living in the crime ridden cesspool of Chicago. I think that is why Chicago WAS on his no trade list. I can see him not reporting and nixes the trade within a couple days and stab the Knights in the back by screwing there UFA hunting/shopping. That would be a perfect world.

Contracts signed by 35+ are always on the book. So yes...if Fleury retires the cap hit will stay.

nevermind....he signed the contract when he was 34.

I was expecting Vegas to unload Fleury's $7M cap hit, and with the flat cap I didn't think they'd get much in return, but I'm surprised to see him go to Chicago. I thought he would go to Carolina. Everything the Canes have been doing lately -- hoarding cap space, dumping RFAs, and not re-signing any of their goalies -- made it look like they were going to bring in a big money #1 goalie, perhaps the remaining piece they need to contend for the cup. Since they can't count on getting one through free agency, and if they could it would likely require a much longer commitment and therefore higher risk, I thought they were doing a deal for Fleury. A contender would have been a better fit for him at this stage of his career, but I think he could only put 10 teams on his no-trade list so I guess he didn't have that much choice.

How would it feel if someone actually did a decent option with this.

M-A F to Pitssburg with 50% salary retained (could end his career there)
Penguins send something like Desmith the other way and a 4th rounder pick. (They get one decent goaltender for this year, and should work capwise)

Better than a forced retirement...
