The only people who think this is a good contract are delusional Capital fans

I think there's 31 other teams that would have signed him to this same contract. You really think he's getting anything lower than $9m? Or anything less than 3 or 4 years? That was never going to happen.

said Caps homer looool of course only Caps fans think this is a good contract

It literally doesn't matter if the contract is good or not.

The only thing the entire organisation should be focused on for the next 5 years is breaking Gretzky's record. **** winning, do something that will never be done again.

He's playing for the record not the cup.

Why not both? Caps are stacked and always a top team.

Ovi negotiates his own contracts too, what a beauty $$- love that he wants to stay for 5 years everyone thought he'd dip to the KHL

The fact that he's staying and the value he's brought to this franchise over the years automatically makes it a good signing.

Totally agree. When Pavelski left SJ it divided fans, broke hearts and destroyed the chemistry in the locker room and on the ice. I know Pavs isn't as big as Ovi but he was our homegrown captain. Ovi leaving Caps makes zero sense and paying a bit of a price for it...so what - Ovi is the Capitals.

This is the cost of doing business when you have an all-time great player in his mid 30's on your roster. If this was a 2-3 year deal it'd be great.

"Stacked", they haven't won a round since winning the Cup. They're one of the oldest teams and their prospect pool is weak.

I would say 40 years old, not 37. Many superstars have excelled through their late 30's.

This is probably not a good contract but I don't think anyone should care. This contract allows Ovechkin to retire a Capital, possibly break Gretzky's goal record, and could see Ovi break into the top-20 for all-time games played. He's apt to pass Fedorov after next season and could pass Kovalev as the NHL all-time GP from a Russian-born player in as little as 2 seasons.

Ovechkin (Crosby for that matter too) have been in the NHL since I've had a vested interest in the sport. I don't know if I'm personally ready to see either retire: I'll happily take another 5 years of Ovechkin and enjoy that time as I still have it.

That's a lot of term for a 35 year old. He is the face of their franchise though.

Not a good hockey signing but a good business signing.

COVID and lost revenue seem like a partial factor in this signing - his salary is 5mil this year. As for OVI chasing Gretzgy, COVID (reduced games) has already had a factor in that, let alone the partial to full lockouts. We knew he was going to get slightly more than Backy, so there's that. I was thinking 4 years, but this is not unexpected.

Term is a year too long, AAV is fair. Overall, I'm happy with this as a Caps fan. People thinking "delusional" Caps fans care about an extra year/mill for our historical franchise player, are delusional.

Break the record and make the playoffs in the process. Who knows what happens.

If the cap goes up soon, it'll also help make this more balanced.

This is a tough one

Dude isn't just "one of the best in the game now," but literally one of the top few goal scorers of all time.

At 35 his decline has been fairly small. Perhaps a little less physical. A little less assists. But still in rocket conversations every year.

All that being said he IS 35 and this contract (gotta be top 4 to a lw) for almost any other 35 year old wouldn't be bad it would be insanely bad.

In the end my biggest concern with it is the 35+ rule. If he breaks down and wants to retire in 3-4 years the cap hit stays regardless of retirement. So I'd have tried to give him a little more aav for a little less term. Like 11.5*3. I'll have to give it a very soft "no" in the poll. But it's a soft no

imagine thinking he will break Gretzky's record for real looooool

Imagine thinking that Ovechkin can’t break the record. He doesn’t even need to have any 50 goal seasons ever again and he can still break it relatively easily.

If he was going to officially retire he could just agree to mutually terminate his contract, which would effectively be the same thing as him retiring, except he just requires Washington’s permission.

Some really weird takes in this thread already.

Did anyone think this WASN'T going to be basically what the contract was going to be? Anyone that looked at one Caps ACGM could realize this was basically going to be the contract.

Backstrom will likely fall off in production before Ovi, which means they need to bring in or develop a center to carry him through to the goal record

Their two top prospects are centers. McMichael and Lapierre. Think they'll both be pretty good.

Didn’t Lidstrom win a Norris at like 39/40?
