Nate Schmidt, MAF, Pacioretty, and Robin Lehner were all substantially overpaid when they signed extensions in Vegas. Vegas has since traded, or attempted to trade MAF, NS, and Max Pacioretty. Lehner was injured for much of last season, and thus, wasn't on the block, to my knowledge. This franchise needs a little more stability from its front office, imo.

I like it for the Jets. They’ll run some combo of:

Morrissey and Pionk
Schmidt and (?) Stanley/Heinola?
DeMelo/Dillon (former teammates that may click together)

A little grit, some scoring too. Not a bad group on the back end for WPG.

Canucks get out of the Schmidt contract for what they gave up. Time to get Pettersson and Hughes signed!

I see it as:

Morrissey - Schmidt

Dillon - Pionk

Stanley/Heinola - DeMelo

How is 5 mil a high AAV for a #2-3 dman? Schmidt did badly in van but I suspect (may be wrong) it's because he was miscast to try to cover the defensive deficiencies of guys like Myers and Hughes which is setting him up for failure.

$5.95M AAV for an average (at best) defender and a 30-35 point scorer (in a good season). That's pretty high. When Vegas signed him, they thought he would progress to a 50+ point D.

Vancouver paid Vegas a 3rd round pick for Nate Schmidt.

Now, they've traded him elsewhere.

If the Canucks got more than a 3rd round pick, Vancouver would have won the trade.

If the Canucks got less than a 3rd round pick, Winnipeg would have likely won the trade.

The Canucks got exactly a 3rd round pick back for Nate Schmidt.

This is a fair deal.

Considering the poor season he had, I'd say VAN won the trade. I'm surprised he brought more than a 5th rounder, given his cap hit.

I got a tweet for yall to think about

Van with the next L on the list

Toffoli could have been in a Canucks Jersey rn along with Tanev

While Van has 26mill in cap space Hughes and Petterson are gonna eat a large portion along with Dickenson. Then they got to replace Holtby. So that space is gonna be gone quickly. Also you got to replace Schmidt and sure they are bringing back Schenn but okay you need a defensively minded top 4 Dman. Dont think were gonna see an improvement in Vancouver's GA.

Demko good luck man

Wait they actually bought him out? ( Holtby )

Schmidt was a good defender in Vegas https://www.google.com/search?q=nate+schmidt+rapm&client=ms-android-google&sxsrf=ALeKk01HZap6vYFcJ66cH5sJpOnZVvBtAQ%3A1627435462628&ei=xrEAYdbMJY-2tAbawKnYDA&oq=nate+schmidt+rapm&gs_lcp=ChNtb2JpbGUtZ3dzLXdpei1zZXJwEAMyBQghEKABMgUIIRCgATIFCCEQoAEyBQghEKABOgcIABCwAxANOggIABCwAxDNAkoECEEYAVDyB1iSCmDjC2gAcAB4AIABvQGIAdgDkgEDMC4zmAEAoAEByAEEwAEB&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-serp#imgrc=G6Got-f_lkjDoM

And 50 point defenseman are actually pretty rare

Schmidt was tied for 40th in defenseman scoring from 2017-2020 with 97 points. So top 2 on an NHL team

Stick little on ltir and that becomes 13 mil

Who do they have left to sign? 2 mil for a backup goalie 6 mil for plionk.

That leaves 5 mil for 5 bottom 6 forwards. Trade Beaulieu and they have 7 mil or so. Likely have to ditch Copp but worth it

Guess we'll find out a lot tomorrow...
Slice it however you like, this team is going in the wrong direction and has to shuffle players (as you show ^ ^ ^) like deck chairs on the good ship Titanic...

Alec Martinez is way better and makes way less. Schmidt may be top 2 in scoring on many teams, but he's not top pair on many, if any teams.

Name a better duo, Schmidt and a 3rd. Bet you can’t.

Yup. Go check CapFriendly transactions. Neal and Martin Jones also bought out by the Oilers and Sharks

This is just simply false

In his three seasons in vegas he was first, first, and second in time on ice for Vegas where the team was first 3rd, and 1st in their division

ie not only was he a top pair defenseman on a contender he was number 1 defenseman 2 out of 3 years.

Whenever the value of player is being assessed, one must always ask these two questions:

How has the player in question affected the on-ice performance of the team?

versus

How has the team affected the on-ice performance of the player in question?

This trade suggests to me that Nate Schmidt is still the same player.

He just went from playing for Vegas to playing for Vancouver.

It had to have affected his on-ice performance.

I don’t get this for Winnipeg, why add another Defenceman that now likely boots Stanley and Heinola out of the frame? Why

If Vegas thought he was so valuable then why would they ever trade him for a 3rd rounder (basically nothing)? And please don't tell me it's because they were in a cap crunch. They could've traded him to almost any team in the league. Dude is a solid 3-4 D. He's not 1-2, not even close. Teams don't trade top pair D for 3td rounders.

The answer as you know is a cap crunch. They just traded their Vezina winner for an ahler...

Fair deal, but yay! Canucks got neutral value for Nate Schmidt via a 3rd round draft pick deposit
