Fixing the cap now

Description
Demelo looks like a cap casualty. Copp is too important to let go in my opinion and demelo seems more plausible. Some part of me thinks that maybe chevy was hoping Seattle would take demelo since he may have had these moves ready for a few weeks

The Jets just fixed their defensive depth and now have a very solid D core, why would they dish out their best young Defenseman in Stanley and and Demelo who is very solid. No thanks - if it comes down to it, look to trade Copp - he is looking for a bigger role and would eliminate cap and fetch prospects.

I’d rather move Stanley and demelo than Copp tbh. Copp is our best defensive forward and is just starting to come into his own offensively. If his number starts with a 4, the jets should get it done in my opinion.

When all is said and done, as much as I like what demelo brings, he is truly an offensive black hole. As for Stanley, I would be okay not doing the gudas trade. As I said, I just think that trade makes the jets better now in a year where they seem like they are going for it

Also, heinola is our best young defensemen. There’s no debate there. Heinola outplayed both of benn and Stanley in the end of season rotation and he was getting better each game

Making Copp's term work is going to be very difficult. Especially with PLD, Scheif, Lowry locked up, he is virtually limited to playing 3rd line wing, and for that cap hit, thats a tough proposition, despite him being very solid. Exactly why he could present the Jets with a "sell-high" option. Trading DeMelo would be alright, but I honestly think if you split up Demelo and Morrissey to pair them each with more active, complimentary pairs, you will unlock a very solid backend without having to make any additional moves. At this point, Copp seems like the one who it will be tough to make the numbers work. If im the Jets, I target a cheap winger with a lower AAV, return a pick, and deal Copp, as much as it makes me uneasy.

So we finally get some top 4 help and you want to trade away any defensive depth we have for picks and a plug? I can't see Chevy looking at anything like this.

That’s fair. I’d just try to keep Copp over demelo. Copp won’t be on the third line all season (he is the 6/7th forward). He also plays a crucial role wherever he goes. If he’s in the top 6, we miss him on a checking line with Lowry. If he’s with lowry, we miss his offence and defence in the top 6. He’s just that important imo.

Well, I wouldn’t necessarily do the Stanley for gudas trade but demelo has to go for cap reasons. I like his game, but he’s the odd man out cap wise

You and @johnnyu22 sold me on not doing the gudas one lol. Reversing it now

I really wonder what they're going to do. I just can't see Chevy and Heisinger giving up defensive depth unless that can't come up with any other options.

Well, what do you suggest? We don’t exactly have cap space anymore unless one of Copp or pionk (or both) take a healthy discount. It’s not like the jets ever lacked depth, they lacked top 4 options. For depth, they have beaulieu, niku, Samberg, kovacevic, and any waiver claims they make. All of that without giving up a first. I’m just not sure that having one of demelo, heinola, or Stanley as “depth” is the best option when they should all be regulars and we have a cap crunch

I think we’re going to see Chevy make a trade we don’t see coming. Some sort of deal for an impact forward on a cost controlled deal. Likely Copp plus going the other way

I like playing the 6 defensemen you have with Beaulieu as the 7th. DeMelo is the odd man out but I would trade Copp also. I don't think he is a $4 mil guy- a solid 3 liner but really pushing it putting him in the top 6. Has he reached his potential? I think he has so trade him when his value is high. Niku needs a change of scenery so I would put DeMelo, Copp, and Niku on the block with Copp's skates the only thing to fill.

I really have no idea. I haven't thought about it enough to formulate a plan. But it will be interfering for sure. I think like @tsyls says, Chevy will come up with something nobody thought of.

I have a strong feeling chevy gets one of pionk or Copp to take a discount. Or he moves Stanley/demelo for a big rd prospect.

I disagree on Copp. He’s the type of guy every team needs to win. Can be placed anywhere and it doesn’t hurt the team, in fact it helps. I think we keep him
