When you have the chance to sign a 34-year old declining 2nd pairing defender to an overpay and too much term with a modified NTC, you just gotta do it. Have to, man.
I'm surprised he got 3 years despite being 34. This contract is well worth it for year 1. It will most likely be fair in year 2 and then bad in year 3. It fits Vega's window so I will say good deal.

Good deal for an experienced, solid 2nd pair defenseman. He is on the decline, but I think having a veteran like Martinez on your team is key. Good signing.
That's too much money because of Martinez's age, but at least the term is reasonable. Anything more than three years would've made this contract terrible.
fine AAV but I'm not a huge fan of the three years. don't be surprised if his offense dips in year two or three, these are the contracts you need to sign when you are a cup contender.

Declining? he just had a career year in every statistical category, it will be fine for the first year maybe two then it could start to look rough.

he plays a great defensive game too so if he keeps that up, even if his points start declining, not a horrible deal for vegas
