Dallas Stars signed Ryan Suter (4 Years / $3,650,000 AAV)

Was this a good signing?

It won't be long before two different teams will be paying Suter to not play for them. Yes, he still has some left in the tank, but this is ridiculous.

EDIT: Whoa whoa whoa, it's a 35+ contract? I did not think it could possibly get worse...

I think they will willing to do this term considering a buyout in year 3 or 4 won't go against cap at his age.

Surprised Suter didn't go for signing with a contender. Guess he wanted more money/term?

Dallas was in the cup finals two years ago and were missing their number 1C last year. They're a dark horse contender

No I believe new rule is a buyout on a 35+ contract does not hit cap, which is why they were willing to do this term. It's not a great contract, but I don't think it's as bad as people think.

Planning for a buyout is a really weird way to manage a team

Most of you guys didn't understand the point here. To sign for such salary Suter asks for more term. Any team which wanted him for just 1 or 2 years would have to spend something like 5M/year. I think 3 years would be better, but I wouldn't be complaining if I were Dallas fan. Besides, the window to win of the team is almost closed. So, I like it.

Why didn't the Wild trade Suter to Dallas half retained and save 3M on the cap?

Dallas gave too much term in this deal.

Brilliant.

$3.65 million!? For FOUR years!?!?? Not gonna age well at all.

$3.65m is cheap. He's a legit top 4 D who can handle a top pairing role. Is the 4 years ideal? Probably not but for those complaining about the term, he likely would have gotten $5m for 2years so the extra term was a way to drive the AAV down.

Maybe Suter will get bought out by the Stars in a year or two and he can sign somewhere else and get the salary hat trick that Lecavallier almost achieved.

the cap hit is fine- I expected around 4mil per...but for 1 or 2 years. 3 is a stretch....4? ugh.
still a very useful top 4 dman...but for how long is the question.

Yeah, the money is only a problem when considering regression, but the term goes until when his original contract ended before the buyout, which certainly isn't optimal.

It isn't ideal, but it's not an albatross either. Honestly when both Suter and Parise were on the Wild, I expected Suter to be able to play out the entire deal so he may still be a decent bottom pairing guy at 40.

Because Suter can block the trade from Minnesota with is NMC and sign a brand new deal to make more money and yeah term is to long

Might just be the worst thing to ever happen to this franchise…
